Break in oil---30W or 10W40?? Opinions please
Hi guys! I just finished assembling my new .060" over 390, with new everything, and was wondering what oil viscosity you would recommend for initial break in? I bought straight 30W Rotella (for the zinc), but thought again, and wonder if I should have gotten 10w40 Rotella instead? I appreciate your comments, opinions!! Spring has arrived!!! Thanks!!

I've wiped a cam. Its not fun at all
Also get a non bypass filter like a Motorcraft. No Frams
It will save your bacon if it lets go
I used Rotella T 20w 50 and GM EOS (FWIW) the second time.
I also think broke it in w/o the inner valvesprings in. It was a 460.
Double check that with these guys though- Its been a while
Someday I'll get another slick

I use vavoline 20 w 50 rasing motor oil in my 223 with the solid lift cam shaft. I have had 2 ford pick ups with 223s since 1986 and that is what I have ran in both of them and atleast one of them was running. I never had a oil related failer. But I'm down here in louisiana were its in the 80,s now on my front porch. I don't know how the oil will act in a colder climet, because I only moved 11 miles From my parents house. I gess in stuck down here.

Howdy, Comp Cams recommended 30w SHELL Rotella for the zinc for break-in.Iwould think that after a 100 miles or so of conservitive driving you could switch to what ever oil you like.I'm told the racing oils all have zinc to some extend.I have been running Mobile One 10-30 for several years in the side-oiler. No zinc there but after breakin don't think it's a issue.

Break in oil choice
Hey, thanks for all the replies!! I'll pick up some EOS and drop it in. Got the engine in and bolted to the trans last night. Should be running Monday, if all goes well....Find out if I remember how to do this stuff! HA! Sorry I don't respond like I should. I have limited access to the computer. I do read the site on my phone all the time. Thanks again!! Dave
