Y Block Alternator Swap

Post by YukonCor55 »

Just finished swapping out the old generator in my 292 Y Block with a Delco 12SI alternator. Man what a difference. Everything just seems to operate a little better when it's got 14+ volts pumping to it!
I got the brackets from 5th Ave Vintage for $85. I picked up the Alternator at Advance for $75. Total time was about 4 hours with a few minutes spent admiring my work. I'm told you can fab your own brackets pretty cheap and you can always find a Delco Alternator in a junkyard, but this setup fit like a glove and in my opinion was well worth the price. By the way, If anybody's looking for a solid, reliable Generator and or mounting brackets, I've got 'em up on Ebay. If somebody here wants 'em let me know and We'll work a resonable Buy it Now that will make us both happy!

glad to hear you got it done with no headaches and are happy with it.

last time my generator quit i almost did that but i only got as far as opening the box in the store, it just looked too gm for me. good thing i have lots of generators.someday i might put a ford alternator on, i bought the correct brackets a while back but the generator is still holding up so it could be a long time for that.
i know lots of people put the 1 wire alt on, its just not what i wanted to see on my truck.

I completely understand your point Iceman. This hobby runs the entire spectrum from 100 point show winners to vehicles just barely held together with bailing wire and duct tape! I'm firmly in the middle. I have 2 classic vehicles, a 55 Fairlane and my 62 Truck. I'm pretty adamant about keeping them mostly stock but that Delco setup is just too slick, too reliable, and too maintenance free to say no. So in that one area I opt for function over form.
I had to laugh at the last show I went to...A guy was parked next to me with a serious show quality 57 Fairlane...he looked under the hood of my Fairlane and gave me a hard time about my "chevy alternator"...anyway, when it was time to go home his car wouldn't start! I gave him a jump but within a few minutes his car died again. Apparently, the old generator gave out! We pushed his car to a parking space and I gave him a ride home. He didn't say another word about my "Chevy Alternator!"

You can also do a one wire alternator all ford, I don't remember who makes it but it's a little voltage reg that bolts on the back of the alt. I was up Wayne K's this afternoon in De. and seen one he just did and it's very clean and Ford. Just another option. I could find out if anyone is interested.
