'89 F150 Clutch pedal problems?

Post by 65 F100 CC »

Hello, I have a '89 F150 with the 4.9 and 4 speed tranny. My problem is that I have to push the Clutch all the way to the floor before the truck will start, shifts good after that and only has a short travel range, but it is getting harder to start. The Previous Owner said it was the clutch bracket had a crack in it. Can someone offer some advice on the fix of this problem. Thanks in advance, Mark.

As you know there is a starter safety switch attached to the clutch. Based on what you are saying and not being able to look at it;
There could be too much slop in the system to operate the switch if one piece is cracked as stated.
Or
Your clutch is hydraulic, when the clutch master cylinder starts to go bad it won't operate the system to full movement - the safety switch is probably not getting activated for this reason.

Is it acting like the clutch is not pushed in? Look at the firewall while some one pushes the clutch. Fords of this era are noted to separate at the firewall and bracket the clutch mounts to and flex. My 86 did this and i had to drive 200 miles without a clutch.

To fix it the firewall needs to be repaired. I used 3/8 head tek screws worked fine for another 200k.

It is not on tilt column,The actual bracket for the pedal assembly is cracked and is making the clutch pedal have to go all the way to the floor. Thanks for the info. Mark.
