how do I remove GLASS from track

Post by Nick64Slick »

I'm in the process of replacing my side glass and vent window glass but I'm not sure how to remove the vent window glass from its surrounding.... its sandwiched in the track pretty tight with the rubber. I don't care if I damage the glass since I'm replacing it, but I don't want to break it if it can be avoided. any thoughts?

At the very botton of the vent window nestled down in the rubber there is a screw. Your vent window has to be open to get to it. Remove the screw. There are two more screws that you will have to remove that are located on the front of the upper door jam. Also if you have a door panel you will need to remove it to gain access to a counter sunk screw that holds the division bar in place. You will have to remove or at least move the division bar backwards to get the vent window frame out. You will find two screws at the very top of the division bar that will have to also be removed before you can move the division bar rearward. That means you will have to remove the door glass too.

theres also 2 nuts/bolts holding the division bar just above the door panel opening which need to be removed. you can see them with the panel removed.

hijack alert coming..sorry,

Once the vent window and frame are out, how do you get the glass seperated from the frame so you can install a new rubber piece? I unscrewed to two screws that act as a top pivot, I also unbolted the bottom bolt and removed the spring, but the glass wont come out, how do you get the glass to come out? there seems to be a grooved section on the rod with a flat washer type "thing" but I can't get it to move up or down?

-- nevermind, I just had to be tougher than I thought with the washer and moving it, I didn't want to break the bolt/post.

Open the vent glass where it is perpendicular to the frame. Take a hammer and give the bottom of the spindle a good blow and it should knock it free from the serrated piece. You may have to support it with something to steady the frame when you do this.

got it thanks, also I found when putting the rubber back in (as Brian said in his build post) start with holes and work outward (is started with the pivot post, then top, then the other end and save the curve for last. I also found the round end of a crescent wrench fits great in the middle and you are really push it down into the tracks then work the sides.

sorry... guess I wasn't clear with my question... I wasn't asking about how to take the assembly and frame out, I already have all that out, I'm asking about separating the actual glass from the surrounding that holds it in place. I ordered new glass and want to put it in.

that said, maybe the confusion was good because it is tough getting the assembly out... I know I struggled with it!

anyone remove the actual glass and put new glass in?

the glass is held into the frame with glass tape. it just pulls out, might be a bit tight.sometimes it comes out easily other times some careful tapping on the edge of the frame is needed.

If you are lucky you will be able to pry it from the frame in one piece but that is not likely. You will probably have to brake the glass and pry the pieces out of the frame assembly. When you put the new glass in it can be a trick to do but with patience you can do it. put the glass tape on the glass and take a rubber hammer and slowly beat it into the frame while resting the frame on something solid. When you have it fully in the frame take a razor knife and cut the excess glass tape off even with the frame

When I did the vent windows on my 56, those buggers would not come out to save you life. I had to brake both them to get them out. On my big slick I had one vent glass to replace and it did come out in one piece. After my luck with the 56 I thought perhaps I was getting lucky.

i would guess that its a long term temp issue.
i would bet not many of mine have ever seen 90* but all have seen -40*

Ice, it could be the temp issue as you mention or the fact that the 56 vent window is surronded by the frame on three sides whereas the Slick vent window is only surrounded on two sides.
