The "Uniceptor" project

Post by jusatad »

Uniceptor - a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor disguised as a F100 unibody pickup.

I've been quietly lurking on Slick 60's for several years and envious of the many great projects and wealth of knowledge. All of which inspired this project. Now it's time to give back.

What started as a CVPI cross member swap grew into a complete transplant of the police interceptor drivetrain into the my 63 SWB uni. I couldn't find a complete cross member at any of the local salvage yards, so I started looking on fleabay. It didnt take long to find a wrecked 2005 Shereiff's car with only 85k, which led to the "uniceptor" project.

Checkout progress pics posted on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2 ... 1569496683

Thanks to everyone that has done this swap ahead of me.

Cool setup!

Amazed with the work & detail you put into the rear control arm mounts. Most folks just loosen the bolts & twist them flat up against the underside of the frame rail (myself included). I admire the effort & skill that took!

Thanks for sharing the details of this, Tad. I really the all the work you put into mounting the rear of the control arms to the frame. I am looking forward to some feedback as to how it drives.

Thanks for all the great comments. I did spend a little extra time on the rear mounts to retain the same angle as the factory CVPI frame. The only change I made was to swap the mounting brackets to opposite sides. I felt it lined up better with the frame and looked better with the mounting bolts pointing inside the frame instead of the outside of the frame. May box that in yet.

I picked up the Sheriff's car in Lincoln, NE. It hit a deer and took out the driver side front corner. The radiator, airbox, PS resevoir, windshield, airbag and left front tire are all toast. It still ran and I drove it on and off the trailer after pulling the fender out and installing the spare tire.

I want to install air bags. I decided to use the 8.8 diff from the CVPI for the limited slip and watts link. Its been shortened 5 inches. Still trying to decide between a 4-link or a NASCAR style trailing arm setup.
Anyone done trailing arms on a slick?

Great job on that front end install Tad! It looks like you took your time and did it right..The cleanest install I've seen!
You mentioned installing bags..Do you (or anyone else) know, with bags, how do you adjust the CV suspension for camber?
My truck is no where near as clean as yours..but I do eventually want to swap the front with either the CV, or the Aerostar, or something! I like 'em low, and the twin i-beams just aren't getting it!

Update...

Post by jusatad »

I spent the week between Xmas and New Year working on this project. Started working on the bagged 4-Link rear suspension with watts link. Pics available in my album and on facebook.
http://fordtruk.com/forums/album.php?user_id=703
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2 ... 1569496683

I bought the universal 4-Link, bags and upper bag bracket from newmaticsinc.com, and the lower bag bracket from V by V on eBay.

I got held up by the driveshaft. It needs to be shortened so I can set the pinion angle. No one near me works on aluminum driveshafts. Either need to ship it off and wait for it to be returned or go to the local salvage and see if they have a steel driveshaft. I know I can get the steel driveshaft shortened locally.

Or fab custom brackets to slide the engine & trans forward? Not sure if the oil pan would clear - I think it's kinda tight on mine. Just thinking out loud.

Some nice work you have going. I like what you did with the C notch in back. Also a nice job on the FWD section.

I might copy the front 4 link bracket design for mine. :)

Driveshaft cannot be shortened

Post by jusatad »

Small Hiccup in my plans. The police interceptor driveshaft that I thought was aluminum cannot be shortened. After talking to several driveshaft repair shops I found on the web, I decided to ship it of to azdriveshaft.com. After they received it on Friday, they called to say that the Ford CVPI driveshafts are a special alloy that is harder than steel and light as aluminum. It requires a diamond tip blade to cut them and they don't have the ability to put it back together.

Now for plan B - I'm looking for a steel driveshaft out a civilian CV or GM. I know I can get a steel driveshaft shortened by a local company.

If you'd rather have an Aluminum driveshaft a buddy of mine gave me one that came out of a 90s Econoline.
Should be pretty easy to find.
