64 front brake wheel cylinder assembly

Post by moondog »

I have decided to go back to the front drum brakes due to the disk brake kit rubs. I prefer the stock look and using the original wheels and hubcaps.
Looking at ordering the wheel cylinder assembly from Dennis Carpenter it list the ones with pre serial #260. My slick is #470, assembled October 1963 if I am reading the chart correctly. Will another year cylinder fit or do I just need to change back plate? What would my options be.
Thanks Roger H

Roger, what disc brake kit do you have on there now?

there is a single piston and dual piston wheel cylinders, be sure to get the dual ones.
i unfortunately can not tell you what the serial # cutoff represents as far as change.
later years of ford wheel cylinders will physically bolt up, piston size would be the only difference.

Don't do it.
Lets take a grinder to the offending lump on the caliper and solve your problem. You don't need to knock off much. Its only a problem with "innie" wheels.

My 62 uni has the single piston front wheel cylinder.
Brian you are saying I can use a standard wheel cylinder in its place? If so I would need to get the matching shoes and hardware, correct. I'm not wanting to change this truck much from original just a few safety up grades.

I went the cheap way and used wheel cylinders for a 65 on my 63. It had the single sided cylinder originally. Cheaper than the 61 to 64 cylinders and just bolted in. Ok disc brake guys flame away. I agree Disc are better and calipers can be shaped to fit early wheels but if moneys tight??

I know my 64 has 1 1/16 bore wheel cylinders on the front, I just bought them from my local parts store Crow Burlingame they were around 40.00 each and the rear which are 7/8 bore were 8.99 each. I don't know what you guys mean about single sided or dual? I only ask just for my own knowledge. Thanks

Ill give this a try. In the 63 models and maybe late 62 ford had a front wheel cylinder that only had 1 piston in it. Simply put it was 1/2 a wheel cylinder. It pushed on 1 shoe only. Hope this helps.

they can be on all years 61-66.
they came on all models too f100/250/350
the names of the 2 types of cylinders is in the factory repair manual, one was standard(single piston) and one an upgrade(2 piston).
