292 y block

Post by danray63 »

Well I did it. This guy about a half hour away had quite a few slick parts for sale, and I ended up buying 2 (still has the ford sticker) fenders, 2 good inner fenders, Then he showed this 292 Y block that I just couldnt shake off my mind. My plans were to replace my 223 with a 300 6. I was told this only has 47000 miles on it. So I kept kickin this around since monday. I called him, and asked if he'd trade a rifle for it. First he said no, then he called me back and said he would be interested, so we made a deal. I kinda like the Idea of an old Y block for my "63. Without gettin into what kind of rifle, I'll tell ya I bought it off a friend about 4 years ago to help him out, and paid $200.00 for it. So I looked into the Y blocks alittle for info. Is the 292 a good engine? Was the deal worth it? If the bottom end is in good shape, I'd like to paint, cam, carb and headers, and what ever to beef it up some, and put a 4 sp behind it. Yea, it's always nice to hear ya did good after the deal is done. I should of asked this tuesday.

They are great engines but aren't going to be what you are used to maintenance wise unless you have had your 223 for a while, solid lifters etc.
It will cost you more to rebuild than a 302 but the sound alone is worth every penny. Not likely needed at 47K though.
It's not too tough to put a T-5 behind one either - great swap!
Your 223 bellhousing will not fit it though. If you do the T-5 swap you will need a 3 speed truck Y block bell to have modified or a 3 speed Y block car bell and the adaptor.
I'd say you did just fine.

My 63 was my first Y and I have no regrets. The 5 speed works great behind a Y also.

I had the Y block in my 61. Quite a torquey motor. I put dual exhaust (2 1/2 inch) & Magnaflow mufflers with an H pipe. Sounded awsome but not too loud. Be quite a bit more powerful than the 300 and mine wasn't too bad on fuel. I miss it. Be nice to couple it with a 4 or 5 speed, keep the revs down on the highway & get better mileage. Mine had the 3 speed and was winding pretty good at 60 mph.

By the way, I also highly recommend the Yblocksforever website. Great info for these engines.

Funny, I never thought of that, but he had a choice between 2, and one was a 223.

I'll keep my eye out for a T-5. The motor does come with a 3 sp tranny still bolted up. I just want a 4 or 5 sp to keep the rpm's down. Last 3 sp I had the motor was always screaming for another gear. I gotta watch the funds alittle before the wife gets alittle upset. She wants me to be happy, just as long as it dont cost me anything.

A 292 is a great engine. If the motor turns over, then it was worth the $200.00.
You should determine whether it is a Y from a car or truck. It's not a big deal but if it's from a car, you will need a couple different pieces in order to mount it. You should also take the time to id the heads, block, intake, etc. Knowing what you have will help when it comes time to beef it up some.

A 4 speed won't keep the motor from screaming on the highway. You will need overdrive, or to change the rear gear. Overdrive is the better option.

The Ford toploader 4 speed OD will work behind a Y block if you want to go the cheaper route than a T5. There's lots of them in the boneyards, look in mid- to late-70's trucks and Torinos, etc.
I had one behind a 351W and loved it, tough trans but a bit of a gap between 2nd and 3rd.
Don't buy a SROD, though. Aluminum case and internal shift linkage that's always worn out. The toploader has an iron case and external linkage.

I've never looked at the od 4spd in re to fitting it to a truck Y. Isn't the input shaft too short and doesn't it use a different pattern to mount to the bellhousing?
The easiest solution will be to find an overdrive unit for the 3 speed. With a little reworking of the wiring it can actually make it a 6 speed and some shifts can be made without using the clutch.
