Dropped the 292
Dropped the 292
Ok I have the 292 in place where the 262 used to be. I have it wired and I can't get it to fire. Checked the dist to make sure I wasn't off 180 but it's ok. Got spark and have been dumping gas or starter fluid but no fire. Seems to crank sort of slow but engine will turn pretty easy at the pulley. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Spark at the coil should be blue and really snap. Starter should be fully charged and spin it over beathell. Is the rotor turning? Have you reviewed the wiring and ID'd number one? Are you on compression stroke? Are you using old gas? Are the plugs wet? You can warm the plugs and dry them in the oven (when the old lady isn't looking).

Try to run a direct hot wire to the + of the coil to see if fires up, if not double check to be sure when you are cranking the engine that spark is going through the points I have seen that some times the wire that goes through the solenoid off the key switch might have breaks in it over the years,, Also be sure the right wires are on the 2 little post correctly, then last resort be sure you did not get bad set of points/condensor are good,, maybe while cranking obsereve the rotor hows its turning and not skipping be sure turning good

You asked if you might have a bad ground. Possibly. The distributor grounds through the engine block. It wouldn't hurt to run a jumper wire from the distributor body to ground and see if the situation improves. There should be no gasket between the distributor and block. Sometimes people put one in there when they rebuild it. If there is a gasket, I suppose it could affect the grounding of the distributor and if there is one, I would remove it.

Have you changed the timing chain on this engine? If so, it's possible that the timing marks were set wrong. Y-block have a curious setting for the timing marks that is totally different from most engines. Even some of the books have gotten thetiming marks set the wrong way. The timing is to be set with the marks at eveven or twelve links apart . This is roughly at the 3 O'clock position if looking at the front of the engine while standing in front of it. Also, If, the plugs are used and the engine has been flooded, sometimes you have to change the plugs and start with fresh plugs before trying to start. You don't mention if it has fired back thru the carb or even tried to start. Did the engine try to start at any time? A little background on the engine would be helpfull in diagnosing your problem.
