Just my 2 cents worth, but I always like to paint my engines flat black in order to help get heat out of the engine, and exhaust manifolds silver to keep heat in until it goes out the other end. The stock colours look like they will do that. However you decide, post some pics so we can see it when it's in.

I'll be sure to post some pics once she's in.

Just flew back home to Florida from Calgary. I have to deal with salt spray here from the ocean, clearly you have to deal with salt to keep the pavement from having your slick slide out from under you! Eitherway, no good for RUST. You live in a beautiful area....I'll be back!

engine colors

I did some research on this a while back with a few old timer gear heads that are local with all this info in books[remember them?].A 223 is COMPLETELY OLD FORD RED FROM THE FACTORY. The same motor only 262cid is considered an industrial/big truck motor and was available as a factory option in f100/250 63 and 64 only and vin plate reflects that.It is satin black block and machine gray covers from factory.60's y-blocks were early ford blue,50's were red in t-bird.65 66 352's were satin black with gold covers. All motors had black aircleaners and all firewalls were cab color, from paint before install. The reason you see some many blue motors is most rebuild shops don;t bother with details like this.IMHO,a clean truck runs better, that includes the motor and if you have an oil leak on a black block and can't see it,either get your eyes checked or clean the motor again. There is a company in S.C. called Luthers. They make the BEST purple power cleaner out there at $3.50 a gal.
Yep, this is Pete!

I've had it in my head that I was going to paint the block on my 445 build-up Old Ford Blue. However, I wasn't sure how much sense this made given that my new oil pan came painted black, the waterpump is black, the harmonic damper is black, and the heads, intake, valve covers, and carb are all aluminum.

After reading this and seeing a picture online today, I think I might paint my block black too... the blue will likely just stand out and not really look right. And from the sounds of it, the stock engine on my truck was painted black too - so that means I'm making it "original", right? :)

Cheers,
Dion

Be careful of generalizations. Engines were painted various colors in the 50's and 60's depending on year, cu. in. displacement and what model ( car or truck ) installed in. It always better to pin point a specific year vehicle and engine and go from there.

Not to belabor the point, but I've done considerable research on the engine colors for the 61-64 Ford Trucks and did not make the statement in answer to 62flareside's question lightly, thus my "Trust me!" comment.

In the absence of documented proof (Book title, page number etc, not someone's memory) to the contrary, I stand by my assertion that the "correct" factory colors for both the 223 I-6 and the Y-Blocks in the 61-64 Ford trucks is: black block, Ford Red valve covers and satin black/semi-gloss black air cleaner.

Upon further researching the subject, you WILL find that the engine/valve color combinations, particularly for the cars, in the 50's and early 60's were all over the place, and even included yellow blocks :-).

Although I haven't researched it, it's my understanding the the Ford Blue didn't make an appearance until the 66 Mustang.

FWIW: As far as colors used by "re-manufacturers", of the five "re-manufactured" Y-Blocks in my possession, four (4) are painted a medium green (which as I recall was the preferred color for the Fred Jones Company's re-manufactured engines) and one is painted Baby Blue. Not a Ford blue in the bunch.
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

Astrowing wrote:Yes, black really hides those oil leaks. You can really see them with Ford blue. I think the red valve cover looks good with a black block though. You really have to get a light in there to inspect things though!
I'm so glad my 352 is black. :) Cause even if it was blue,it would be black

The engine color in the Ford cars was different every year and I've heard it was so the mechanic popping the hood in 1960 could tell at a glance what year engine it would be. Blocks were different colors, valve covers were different colors, and even fans were different colors depending on with and without AC. It seems like that they got away from Henry Fords mantra, "You can have any color you want, as long as it is black." My understanding with the trucks though is that the 223 was black with the red valve cover from 1954-1964. The 223 in cars I'm sure was different every year.

There were two colors of Ford blue. My 1958 Tbird with the 352 has the old blue block and black valve covers with a white air cleaner.
