engine swap

Post by goonie »

How's it goin' guys? I'm glad to be a member of this awesome site. I just recently purchased a 66 f100 custom cab w/a 352 and I need some help with a possible decision. I have read some of the other postings on the 352 being an expensive fix and I may have an opportunity to get my hands on a 5.4 supercharged engine from a wrecked f-150 lightning. There seems to be allot of room under hood for one, but it may be close. If this is one of those things that you do to your truck and are forever fixing things because it just wasn't meant to be, then I want nothing to do with it. And if that is the case can anyone refer me to a site that sells a rebuild kit for a 352 engine and carb? Any comments are welcome. FYI I can get the tranny to.

I can't speak for the others, but I'd jump on the Lightning quicker than a cat can lick his own, er ah, well, you get the picture.
Just my humble opinion

Not gonna fib to you goonie, wiring wise it will be ALOT of work unless there is a engine/tranny management system out there that is designed for swapping that engine. However it would be an incredibly COOL swap! You will likely have to fab up some mounts but if you can weld that isn't too tough, may be a crossmember to swap it out there too. I personally say Go For It! if you are up to the job. Found this looking for something else. http://www.f100central.com/mounting.html :welcome:

About a year or so ago one of the truck magazines had a write up on a 65 or 66 that had been converted to a lightning. They may have did a body swap, I don't remember exactly.

If its a wrecked vehicle, find out how much more for the whole wreck. You'll need wiring, probably ought to take the tranny as well, and god know what other things will arrise.

You will basically end up re-wiring your 66. Electric fuel pump will be needed, probably have to covert to a tank under the bed. Things like temp control, fans, radiator etc etc etc.

But, god what a swap.......

Welcome to Slick 60's

In the April edition of Custom Classic Trucks mag, there is a truck profiled (it is a 77 Ranger XLT Lariat) and they did the sheet metal swap to an 02 F-150. It is a 5.4 Triton. Might check it out.

If the frame aint hurt you might try a sheet metal swap

Bad news fellas. My little brother left me a message about the lightning engine and it wasn't good. He says the motor looks to be in bad shape and doesn't think that it is worth paying the money for, He said it may cost me a butt load to fix. So, I guess I will be rebuilding the ol 352. Anyone know where I can get ahold of one those Haynes engine books for the 66 ford or know of website to go to so that I can rebuild this crazy thing. Also, has anyone every had there block "chemically" washed? I forget what the exact word to use is. And if anyone has, is it expensive. I can break it down and take it to them.

Normally when you take a block down to a machine shop they "tank dip" it clean.. are you doing your own machine work?
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

maybe you can find a 390 rather than the 352. you dodged a bullet by missing out on the 5.4. imho

what makes the 390 better than the 352. is it more efficient, more powerful, etc.?

Its bigger man....

Isn't that the only thing that matters?

Seriously, a 390 will have more grunt and power. But is that what you need?

dude... that's sad. The lightning swap would have been a nightmare, but damn it would have been sweet... a 352 is hardly a contender against that...

The 390 is def. more power... cubes, longer stroke = more torque.
'63 with 390 & lots of juice. But never enough. Always want more.
