Leeroy, I`m not quite bald yet!, but I`m getting there.

So far I have a 92`Toyota Crown P/S box, that hasn`t been used in a F100 yet, the Datsun 280C is the box most used to do the power steering conversion, I haven`t seen one in person yet tho!, but the Crown box is a much more chunkier box than the Datsun one. The trouble is finding a pitman arm to fit!, as it needs a drop in it!, I spoke to my mechanic yesterday and he said that altering pitman arms is illegal!, and went on to tell me of a guy he knows that could do it for me!, he also said we should have a look into an Electric power steering column, he drives rally cars and uses one in his Datsun 120Y and has installed dozens of them in other rally cars, so I`m off to see him now!

Wow, $1500 for a 280c box! The whole car isn't even worth that much!

Yes modifications and Australia don't really seem to go really well. Vicroads asked me for an engineering certificate for the bed on my slick.....

Leith that 280c box looks like it is in a 55-56-57 chev,it's a common conversion and I have a mate that does them,
up here you can modify a pitman arm ,but it cost,specialised welding and a x-ray report.
The cost of power steering boxes a rip off,like you say a 280c car is worth nothing,

Alan ,could you use a xd falcon box,worth about 30-50 bucks at a swapmeet and in my 76 f100 ,ford used a xa-xb column in it to get the column auto.

I don't know why a later model power steering box would not work. Of course our gear boxes mount on the opposite side, but I'm not sure why you could not bring it over to the opposite side (same position) and weld a U shaped frame around the steering box and weld or bolt it to your frame. You could then bolt it in its original position to the side of the frame(cage) you created for it. With some solid welding and heavy guage steel I think this would work just fine. The pitman arm would still be in the same orientation as if it were on the other side. The hose connections would still be on top and very accessible also. If you have access to a machine shop you may be able to get this bend from one single piece of heavy guage steel.

Let me know if this makes sense.

Ben, i`ve been through that with Garbz, there just isn`t enough room, have a look,

Darren, I looked at a XA/XF box and they are even shorter than the one I have, but a good drop pitman arm!, that may end up as a part of the solution!.

Leith, No I haven`t, but I don`t think it would work.

boben, I have and at this moment I can`t remember why I discounted it!, will look again tho!

did you see on AFF that darryn( not our Darren here), has put a rack and pinion out of a AU11 falcon into his dentside?, and reports no bump steer problems after 15,000 km`s!, sounds very interesting!!

Talking about bump steer.... Got my slick back today, over 2 months away! I'd forgotten what 'manly man' straight axle steering was like

Finally just got it back after the whole wheel incident. Almost 3 months in the end. Nice fresh metal in that bad rust spot behind the wheel however.

Thats a teriffic job putting in all that falcon gear, but of all the dashes to put in, WHY AN AU?? They are the ugliest of them all. Maybe he had a smashed one? Looks good all together though.
