Depending on original application, year of production, etc, there were many variations on plug location.
Way back in 1983, I had a mercury Zephyr that was my DD, and I was also bracket racing:):) Well, the PO had swapped out the 7.5" diff for a 4 cyll 6.5" diff....and the power of the 302 was too much for it

Anyways, we went out cruising country roads and within 30 minutes had a 1957 ford 9" to use...but it was housing & axles only. So, my friend Steve lent me a 3:55 pumpkin to use....and once Steve had cannibalized the brackets off the 6.5" diff & welded them onto the 9", it was all bolted back in the car, brake backing plates from yet another diff installed, etc. FINALLY time to put some lube in the diff:)
Well, this is about when we discovered that neither the housing or the pumpkin had a fill plug in them!!
So, being smarter than the average bears, we simply waited until we were basically ready to drop it off the jackstands, and with one wheel back on the ground, and the opposite side still elevated, we removed one axle and proceeded to pour the lube into the end of the housing:):)
