It`s smoking time!
I have decided to have a go at building a smoker/BBq!, so has anyone got any tips or photos of their creations, I`m planning it around a 100ltr auto LPG tank (about 25 gal), and any tips on not blowing yourself up cutting LPG tanks?
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

Alan: a quick google search for "DIY smoker" got About 2,320,000 results:)
here is a shortened up version of the url for the search

Next summer, when I dig out the roots from a Mountain ash we cut down over christmas 2009, I am going to dig down so that I can do like the bedouins do, and cook a lamb underground (dish is called Zarb?)
saw this on a canadian cooking show, Chef Abroad, with chef Michael Smith, they went out into the Jordaniandesert near Wadi Rum, where they cooked a whole lamb underground:)

Allen,
I made a smoker stacking two 35 gallon recovery drums together,
I used a primus camping stove as a heat source and an upper door for the meat, sausage and such with a large bowl under the meat. A lower door for adding the smoke material in a cast iron frying pan above the flame.
I also added a small fan at the top of the drum to equalize the smoke and heat.... has been working for 15 years.
I will tell you it creates its own weather inside and is susceptible to outside temps, so some kind of insulation will help a great deal
as to the cutting of your tank, water, is the only way I know to cut a pre used tank like f7bigjob suggested

Alan,
Here is a thread to my brother and I's build.
http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16913
Since this build thread we've cooked on it a few times with very good results. Some of the advise I can offer up is find a vessle with as thick of steel as possible. The tank we started with was pretty thin and liked to move around on us when cutting and welding. Also, if your going to do an offset fire box, make sure to err on the large side. I've found it easier to have a big bed of coals/logs and choke them down to the temp I'm shooting for rather than having to continually add.
Here is one more thread that shows the pit in action,,,,,,, Hell, there's even a couple trucks in there.

Steve, I think I`ll got your method!, being a gas fitter I have seen what something like this can do!
James, look up "Hungi"!, it`s the New Zealand way of cooking, and is very similar to what you are thinking of.
Rick, I have put that on my favourites list.
Johm, I`d like to see your smoker!
Danny, that is the design I think I will go with!, with the bit of Googling I have done that one seems to work the best! and have added that to my fav list as well!
Matt, What can I say mate!, that thing is awsome!
, and I think you had better bring it to SS5 with! OR!, don`t show up!!!
I think I may join that site you are on, there is some great info to be had, thanks for the link!
Mikey, I think thats the restaurant Ezer wants to take us to next year before SS5 starts!, we did however go to Soulmans BBQ joint while we were in Mesquite TX!, that was really full on smoked ribbs! only thing missing was Beer!

That tank should be perfect for smoker! Have fun with it. We are building the trailor for ours in the next couple weeks, sure would be fun to drag it down to SS.

Re: It`s smoking time!
I am going to check out these links as I am wanting to build one on a trailer myself. I am looking for a couple water tanks off a Cement truck for mine, they should be pretty thick and work out well. I have the axle and frame material so now all I ned to do is find the tanks and get started...............Kid
There are some Days I should not be let to go into the public without adult supervision
Re: It`s smoking time!
Kid, that web site from the links I posted is a good one. I've learned quite a bit from those guys and girls.

Re: It`s smoking time!
OK!, I thought I`d give a photo up date of my progress with the smoker, I`ve named it "IRON FIRE", because of the flame I made for the chimney out of horse shoes!
the fire box,

fire box dampner,

Fire box door,

start of the firebox air intake,

The air intake needed an adjuster, so I cut this off an old plow in our front yard,

after abit of cut and shut this is what I ended up with

joining the firebox to the cook chamber,

with the chimney cut in and welded,

took it out for its first burn!,

a pic of how it got it`s name!,

Re: It`s smoking time!
Alan, that thing turned out awsome! I especially like the details like the vent adjuster and the low rain cap adjuster. The horse shoe flame is cool as hell. Your gonna have some good eats from that unit
