I hope this isn't a double post, I was browsing ebay looking for a few luxery items like A/C and stuff to keep the wife happy about me moving a slick to texas later this summer, I'm just tired of driving the new trucks and I prefer my '65 F-250 and I am dying to see how the 351 drives compared to the old 352. anyway I saw this a/c direct fit and it has ones that cover the 63-64 model years as well as the "newer" trucks. hopefully this can help someone

I've been looking at those for a while. They pop up on ebay every couple of weeks. I think I'm gonna cough up a few bucks some day and get one. Being from Tucson, and being at home in the summers, I NEED one!!!
'63 with 390 & lots of juice. But never enough. Always want more.

I am considering the underdash type that has a/c only. My heater seems to work fine and if I ever trade the truck the a/c can go into the next truck.

Got one in my 66, works very good. The heat is hot and the a/c cold. The only draw back is that you lose most of the glove compartment, but o dont use gloves.

This is what I've been looking for..... I happened to ask a 53 chev. truck owner how his vintage air worked & he was not impressed. I asked him what issues he had & although he'd had it installed by a vintage air auth. dealer he said it just didn't get that cold.

I'm going to investigate these people & see what gives.

I was all set to drop the cake on the vintage air system ($1700+).

I have been considering adapting a Fox body heat / AC setup to mine. It's all on the passenger side of the firewall like an original Slick heater + it's a fairly small unit so fit shouldn't be a huge issue. If you are running a small bock accessory brackets are readily available. The system is readily adaptable to R134. With the quantity of Fox body cars out there (Granada, Fairmont, T-Bird, LTD, Mustang + their Merc counterparts) parts availability is a non issue, this also keeps service parts prices lower. I am no where near ready to start a conversion on one of mine but thought I would share it anyway in case someone else wants to give it a shot.

I just happened to discuss this very topic with Garbz this weekend and his shop only ueses the Vintage Air systems. I do believe that there are pros and cons with each. I will most likely use the VA system since theirs comes with servos instead of cables.

Cool post, ( he he)

I installed a vintage air system in a 1970 340 Charger, I made the hangers for the under dash unit so I could get the unit real close to the firewall and keep the factory glovebox.

We put the heater hose fittings inboard as they were shorter allowing the AC/heater unit to go closer to the firewall, the box is angled and narrower towards the passenger dide.

The belts for the compressor hit the ribs on the waterpump so the owner of the shop (Superb Craftsman) modified the braket to work.

The AC and heat worked superb and the owner of the car was happy.

Possibly all add on units might need a tweak or two to fit but it is nice that you can buy this stuff.

Myself, I am fabbing up an AC/heat unit that will go in place of a heater box on my 65 F-100.

I used to have an underdash unit off of 65 Mercury but I thought I could make something that was hidden for the most part.

Slick A/C?

Post by Customcab4x4 »

If you don't mind a "hang on", the early Mustang units fit real nice and are a lot cheaper that a complete "system" from anybody. I had an extra 66 Mustang unit from "back in the day" and stuck it in my 64. There were even holes under the lip of the dash that lined up with the brackets. I don't know...but maybe units very similar to these were available back then from your friendly Ford dealer?

Good luck, old.gif
