Back up light suggestions?

Post by banjopicker66 »

I have a set of cheap halogen "fog" or driving lights mounted on my aluminum camper top for good backup lighting, but I would like to explore some options for when the topper is off. These work well, but I want some that have either a period correct style, or are neatly blended into the lines.
What have you all found that works and looks good?
The current for the lights runs through a modern relay and fused circuit, so wattage limitations are not a concern.
I have wired the '70s light tubs up in concert with the halogens, but by themselves, they just do not cut it.
The thought occurred to me to put them inside the rear bumper with cutouts, but not sure that would work well.
I don't think they will work well bolted on either the top or bottom surface of the bumper.
Any ideas?

Jeep bumpers have light cutouts in them for being offroad at night. Not sure why it wouldn't work.

What was the first year that Ford put backup lights on their trucks?

Banjo. The little round lights from the 57-60 fridge trucks fit right under your existing tail lights.
I've seen them several times and they look like they belong there.
You can get clear lenses from most of our suppliers.
Check it out.
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

LMC sells these and I think it would look nice on our trucks... but then again I like the step bumpers...

So with these in mind, If you could cut the holes yourself, to fit your lights, I think that would look good too...

What I'm doing on my '66 (and what I did previously on my '65) is installing a set of '67-'72 taillights with the integrated reverse lights. They're the same dimensions as factory and go right in. The reverse lights can either be wired to a switch in the cab, or what I'm doing/did was swap out the top cover to my NP435 trans to a late-'60s/'70s NP top cover with the built-in switch for reverse lights. Being up higher than lights mounted underneath, they may give out enough light, but if not, you could alway slave a set of spots underneath into the taillight back-ups.

50 watt halogen replacement bulbs work quite well; just don't leave them on very long!
The flop-out LED replacement bulbs are considerably more expensive, but will give equal lighting without the risk of melting your lenses.

a cargo light provides pretty decent back up illumination. i put one on my 66 years ago and use it all the time in the winter.

since i have the fridge bed i used led stop/tail turns and put clear lenses over the original lights and wired it so both elements come on.
makes for nice bright reverse lights

I've used inexpensive "driving lights" from the auto parts store under the bumpers of my trucks and on company trucks for years. I run relays and a switch so they can be used when I need them.On my company trucks I wire a switch and piggy back them with the stock wiring,so I can have light when I need it, good for hooking up trailers and lightplants on the night shift. And if i wipe them off I' only out 20 bucks or so.
