Windshield seal too big?

Finishing up restoring the cab on my 66 and I've run into a snag. Cant for the life of me get the windshield seal to go in correctly. Seems like its too big. Keeps popping off the glass. Even with the chrome trim installed and the seal quite loose, it shows that there is a good 1-2 inches of extra. I'm used to the seal going on a little tight and the tension keeps the seal in place around the glass. The back glass is that way. This front is a total PITA. Its a Dennis Carpenter seal as well.

Samdog1966 and myself did his a little while ago, I think it was a little sloppy, but it popped right in and without any issues, Maybe John can add to this.....We did install the trim to the rubber first [ pita@#] like you did, too.

Man this sucks... I hope its just the chrome rubbers...

I am fixing to order from them and don't want that issue.

I just replaced the rubber on mine and had the same problem.
Do not soap the rubber on the glass side,only the body side. As you install the glass the excess will disapear.
Instead of tie wraps, I used masking tape.

I just did the tie wraps for demo purposes. Tape sounds like a good idea. Will need to try again tomorrow evening as I have no helper today.

Steve and I installed new seal on my '66 CC last fall. The seal was sloppy at first. We used masking tape to help hold it in place. We installed the seal on the glass and the ss trim to the seal and then with a small rope and lots of soapy water we put it in the opening. It came out OK, but was a real pain in the ass. That was my first (and last) windshield seal install. Good Luck.

when we did my wifes truck after the 08 slickstock where i bought the windshield rubber at LMC the seal seemed way too big, was a non cc type and had a real pita keeping it on the glass until i got it started in the opening. been 4 years and no leaks but the next ones im ordering from flashbackf100s.

mine was big also... (no trim) and I worked for a day and a half till I relented and called a professional in to do it on his own time... 2 1/2 hours and $75 later it was like magic and it just popped right in... the best $75 I spent on the old girl so far...

Big it is until it pops in... funny how it works...

Have you tried the nylon rope trick yet? Make sure you run the rope around the opening at least twice, Stretch it tight as you go, start at the very bottom, and end at the bottom with the rope. rap it around tight twice, Tape the end of the rope with duct tape so it don't pull out set the glass, make sure you know what end to start the pull," the last run of the rope starts first" pull the rope and tuck the rubber as you go, have someone push with a little pressure on the outside and almost a slapping motion with the palm of his hand while you are pulling the rope. Use a plastic paddle to tuck the rubber down as you go.......

I too, paid a professional to put mine in. Some things are better left to people who actually know what they're doing, and I didn't. He came by, had the damn thing installed in about 10 minutes.
It looked so easy, I asked if they'd watch while I tried the back window and bought them a beer. After about 15 minutes of cursing and sweating, I noticed they were laughing at me. Less than 5 minutes later, the rear glass was in and they were gone. Best $75.00 I ever spent.
But as I recall, the big flange on the rear seal goes inside and the glass goes in from the outside and on the front windshield its just the opposite.

I always pay someone to do it. It usually cost $50-$100 and it's cheaper than ruining a gasket (done it). They know all the tricks. Money WELL spent.

i just cant see giving up the $ when i can do it myself.
its not that hard, i have not broken any and have even reused the seals
nice to have help but if not i can still do them.

a friend was going to pay to have his back glass put in but i did it for free and saved him the $.

the only thing i really do not care to do is auto trans rebuilds.
thats why i drive manual trans vehicles

The kicker is, I already managed to install the windshield. I'm upgrading to the SS trim and thought it went on after you installed the glass. After a few minutes of attempts I realized the glass needed to come back out. I was not happy. Then after attempting to install the trim and seal onto the glass, the slack and complexity of the operation pushed my frustration past it's limit at that time.

I hope to reattempt this evening.

What in the world is the honey bee comb stuff under the gasket... (I am sure its from the factory)

I have both front and back windows out right now.... Back one looks cake!

Front one is going to be fun for sure...

I did manage to get a VW bug (1967) windowshield gasket in as a youth... so I think I am going for it!
