LED lights

Post by dotcentral »

I'd like to make both my 66 & 71 as visible as possible. I'd thought about a center mounted brake light, but don't think I want to go that route. Lately I've been thinking about LED bulbs to replace the old 1157 bulbs. Are these legal to run on the highway? I have seen them listed in various magazines, but not sure if they are legal for on road use. I ask because a few years back I saw some at discount auto chain, and they had the "off road use only" disclaimer. I understand they take a special flasher to operate.

Thanks for any help. I tried a search for this, but didn't find anything.

They probably aren't noticably brighter than non LED late model taillights, some new cars use LED taillights and they are legal on them. I also doubt you will get a ticket for making your truck safer, lol.

I know LED's are legal in Texas, but blue dots are not. If you check with DPS legal section in your state they will usually know for sure. I think your right about the flasher. I put some on a vehicle and they did not draw enough current to trip the flasher. Not for sure, but I believe I wired it in series with the front to make em work.

if you buy some of the new replacement models they have a load equalizer (resistor) built in to the light, this makes the car see the same load as a regular bulb. I know the APC ones do (though I am not a fan of most their products).

Blue Dots Rule. Had them on my '72 Shorty. They are illegal but the "man" said they wouldn't stop me just for using them.
I know I had them on my truck at least 5 yrs and was never stopped.

That reminds me, need to put some on my '65. 8)
