Hear ya Doc
Had a need for power as a young lad.Went the Mopar route but after a couple of years I got tired of the expense.
Found a good compromise with motorcycles & a basic truck lifestyle.

Have to admit though its great to have the big block under your foot and if you can afford it why not go for it.

66 with a 300 here. Allmost went with a 429 but decided my wallet didn't need it.
Not that the 300 gets good mileage or anything but I sure am saving a lot on tires etc.

I had a 390 galaxie once. I miss that car. I would love to have another. the only car I would sell my truck to get would be another galaxie. I have also had a few 4cyl and 6cyl on the list of cars I have owned. none are as fun to work on (as long as things are going well and I have cash in my pocket)or to drive as the galaxie or the 460 f100. I have put just about every extra dime I have had for the past 2 years in it, sometimes neglecting other things and eating countless microwave burritos. I did 2 engine/tranny swaps in the dead of winter, in rain and snow, in the 30 degrees, out in my friends yard.(not so much fun actually)

the point is I love the feeling of not driving stock. not being the same as everyone else and when I drive it down the street people are staring all the way down the block. people gawk in traffic, at gas stations and parking lots. passengers get excited when I punch the gas and smoke the tire. to me its all worth it. like I told my ex GF "the truck IS all that matters" messed up? yeah. I'm ok with that.

I had a 69 Mach I with the 428CJ, nice car ran great, but no where near the torque the 460 is putting out. Also had a 70 coupe with a blown 351, it would pull the front wheels of the ground and run 130 MPH in the 1/4, on 275/60 /15 street legal tires. Would that qualify me to know torque? If not how about the rides I have taken in my buddies 70 Pro Street Mustang with the 615 cu.in BBF? Amazing how easily that car will smoke the 18.5 Mickeys on the back, must be a ton of torque. Next on the agenda when I get the extra cash is to enroll in Roy Hill's Drag Racing School and learn to drive the Pro Stock cars.

Doc, I know torque, have known him for years. A bit of a disclaimer here, doubt I know torque like those multi motored sled tractors know torque, or even those 800 cu.in. alcohol burning truck pullers.

If the 65 was my daily driver it would have a small V8 or something more user friendly. As it is it is my stress relief, so MPG and other sensible things take a backseat to what the testosterone fed side of my brain wants.

So to answer the question posed in this threads title, every penny I have put into it. If Macho means being able to get sideways at 30 when I stand on it, I am assuming that is a definition of Macho, then it is worth every penny. I am in a high stress sitiuations every day, my Macho truck is my Harley ride, my fishing trip, my meditation, my stress ball, etc. etc. all rolled up into one. It is worth every penny.

Maybe not everones cup of tea, but I didn't build it for everone.

Doc. I have moved back and forth between V8's and 4's my whole life.
the one (actually2) that was a good compromise mileage-wise was my '79 mustang and capri, with an OD behind a 302, got 21-22 MPG or so.
Lately , since 2001, I have owned a Canada only-Acura (all my current vehicles are Canadian) with a Honda 1.6 litre Vtec. gets 40 mpg on the highway running the air conditioning, and puts out 1 horse per 12.5 cc of engine. Fantastically engineered and dependable car.

But, at the same time I have owned that car, I have pretty much always owned a ford with a windsor V8. I just can't stop myself from loving those engines. The sound the power, the sound, did I mention the sound?

So maybe there's a balance to be struck. One thing I can not stand, and this goes back to the '66 Dodge straight axle 3 on the tree truck I learned to drive on, is the sound/lack of performance of a straight 6. Makes me want to gag. So do straight axles, and threes on the trees. :P so down the middle between V8 and 4 does not cut the mustard for me. Probably, you are different.

my 2 shekels
JC
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

dang, The nice price.

After finishing my black car I was looking for car show schedules on the net and discovered a local tuner site.

I started reading there and found a bunch of muscle car guys, street racers and the tuners. I thought it was funny when they ripped on "ricers". I figured anything without an Oval, Bowtie or Pentstar was rice.
Seems rice is more of an attitude thing for them. Speeding with a fartcan and neons is rice. A JDM front clip or a swapped turbo mill is not.

I rode in a 92 Civic Si Hatch last year. Guy had a B series sleeved motor swapped in with a Turbo, tube suspension and Brembo brakes. At 22psi ahd 380 hp we had the car doing 165mph. It was like a bike. All with a stereo, quiet ride and a stock interior (shoulda had a 10 point cage)

A buddy let me take his WRX Sti for a spin. I'm kind hoooked on those now.

I have a 466 70 Fairlane, a 429 62 Uni and a 30 68 vert.
They're not dailies, they are fun cars.
My daily is a 96 Ram Indy500. Its terrible on gas but its still a fun truck.
I use it a lot as I do signs on the side. When my 62 is dependible Ill sell the Ram and start looking at gas mizers (or maybe buy a Honda CBR900RR)

I think a 4 cyl is great for a daily but they are spendy to fix, even OEM spec'd. Problem is my hands don't fit anywhere under the hood, I'm always afraid Ill bend the floor jacking them up and I HATE head gasket repairs.

If you are looking at return on investment for a 428 car and get uptight on spending you need to reassess your hobby. Hobby cars are whores, they will steal you blind and you will never be completeely satisfied. With that in mind you better enjoy the journey.

Me, I swipe the card, jam in the nozzle and never even look at the pump. Heck, Ive rebuilt my 466 4x. Its the price of admission.
Someday I'll get another slick :(

If you have to ask then you don't understand. Myself, like a a lot who have posted, am building this truck not to be a daily driver. I have a very stressfull job. My slick is my stress reliever. If I wanted an efficient truck or car for that matter I would just buy one. Its cheaper for me to buy a little toyota pick up, or a honda civic that is 10 years old than what it would take to get my slick to that level of efficiency and reliablity. I know who Mr. Torque is too. My first engine that I built in high school was a healty 390 with tri power. Dynoed at 450 hp at the crank and about 475 lb ft of torque. It found a home in my slick. Yes my dad let me have something like that even though I was a dumb ass 16 year old. The new engine will have like 550 hp. You know why? Because I can. On a side note my Dad is taking his 07 gt500 to the Shelby factory to have it "upgraded" to the super snake. Can you say 720 hp?
Cheers,
Jarrod

It's more about being different and cool for me.

When a guy in his $50.000 F250 pulls up beside me and gives me a nod and a thumbs up and then I remember I'm driving a classic 40+ yr old truck that I might have 1200 bucks in......yeah, that's cool. 8)

I haven't felt that cool since I sold my '55 F100, which was powered by a 429 4V btw.

I am abit of a Stang junkie too Phil. The 05 GT & 85 GT are #s 7 & 8 for me.
If you want a car with good mileage buy a late model Taurus. Gets darn near the the same mileage as jap crap, rides better, cheaper to fix, cheaper to buy, will run darn near forever if you take care of it, (I could go on too) and best of all puts $$ in OUR economy.
I have said for years the Japan never stopped fighting WW2, they just changed tactics. They have brainwashed all our kids that their stuff is better (then they complain they can't find a job!), they keep buying land here, and companies, hmm.
If you INSIST on a jap car at least buy a Mazda because Ford owns a huge chunk of them. A Mazda 6 is a MUCH slicker ride than a F@#$%^&* accord anyway.

I'm not going to lie, i'm babysitting a 07 WRX STI for a friend. I've been happily installing all kinds of performance parts on it while he's gone...... What an amazingly engineered machine. Doesn't hold a candle to my Y block starting up though :-)
