Fan shroud

when I did the frame modifications to my truck I also swapped in a 460 with C-6 in the truck . when I built the mounts for the engine and trans I raised them up in the frame so nothing would hang below the frame rails . doing this located the fan to the radiator to high so I built a fan shroud to hold two electric fans . I took pictures along the way and though some of you may want to see them . I have to admit having the equipment to do this makes it allot easier to do . from beginning to end I have about 7 to 8 hours into this project .
here is a picture I took of the Auto Cad drawing of the punching program I made
the .090 aluminum sheared to size
a few pictures before and after punching
a few pictures after I formed it in a break press
after welding the corners
test fitting the fans , then removed them for paint
after paint I mounted them to the shroud and pre wired the controls and ran the wires to the side , ready to install on the radiator
attached to the radiator and ready to be wired into the truck

That looks great although I will have to admit the urge to polish it instead of painting would been hard on me .

Looks good. What are the fans and CFM? Are you going to use a controller?

Rick , it would look good polished but I didn't think it would go good with the rest of the look of the truck

Dan I used a dual fan control kit from Summit I mounted the relays between the fans. I'll get back with you on the specs for the fans.

Oh I agree with the style of your build polished would have looked like ass but it still would have been hard for me to paint it .


Granted if you had polished it theeeeeeeeeeeen you would have to bring the rest of the trucks finishes up to match Some Flake some pearl a little candy .


One of the things I do like about your truck is the average person would look at it and go Hmmmm neat old truck and have no idea of the amount of fabrication hidden under the patinad paint .

Too rich for me but it sounds about right for a low production item like that.
Have you had a chance to put it to use? I saw something like that in a magazine a while back and the shroud prevented the flow of air at cruising speed and resulted in overheating. The solution was to add some flappers that open and allow air to pass through at speed but close to allow the fans to pull air through the core at low speed and idle. I think they were made out of some kind of rubber.

cost can be high on anything that consist of just one part. If you can use the exact same shroud that I made without any changes the cost could get down to around $125.00. There's $30.00 worth of material in it.

I understand that completely. It actually sounds pretty good for all that is involved. My deal is that I can do it and the cost/benefit is not good enough for me to take the easy way out. I'm not quite ready to start that project either.

My radiator is different.

Nice work! I have a ? about the series of holes made in a circle instead of one single arc. I think I know what your answer will be but just curious and trying to learn something new.

I used a 1.250 round tool to punch the large radius with on a CNC punch machine.

Skip I used .090 aluminum. I didn't need to use stainless because I wanted to paint it black. I can make you one from stainless if you want.
