power steering/Alternator brackets

Post by Godlover »

I have a 302 that seems to be a 1980 - not sure what it came out of. I removed the air conditioning and smog pumps but would like to get the right brackets. Walked around the junk yard today couldn't find anything that I knew would work. Any suggestions?

Where are you? And what brackets are you needing? I have the accessories, pulleys, and brackets off a early Lincoln 302 that are all cleaned and painted.

I am in Iowa. I went to car country but wasn't sure what I needed and Rich wasn't any help. Wednesdays are a bit tough unless we can go early. I have church night starting at 5

I had to fabricate the ps pump bracket for the 302 engine (1972) I put in my 64 as the one that came with the engine would not work with the saginaw pump I used. The Alternator bracket was just one long arched slotted arm to make up tension on the belt and the alternator bolted on the engine.

It appears to be a very nice kit. It is similar to what I have on one of my vehicles and I have more than wrapped up in the alternator mounting and hardware alone excluding labor. A pre-packaged kit beats chasing around to find a 7" quality socket headed cap-screw, IMO., let alone the fabricating. I went to a bunch of trouble to lower and align the alternator while retaining the same belt orientation.
You have probably noticed the serpentine set-ups use a reverse rotation water pump, so if you choose to NOT use the serpentine set-up, you would need to change water pumps (and belt-driven fan if used).

Good advise! I think I will get it ordered!

It won't work unless I change pulleys, timing cover and water pump. I have a v belt for the power steering and water pump and serpentine for the alternator. Ugh!

Wow, will you be able to use your existing brackets sans the A/c and smog pump? There are ways around changing the timing cover, but it's a real pain to get the right components needed to line up correctly. It sounds as if you are dealing with an engine originally found in a truck. Does it have a bulky alt/ smog bracket on the passenger side?

Yes - it does have the bulky backet on the passenger side.

You CAN make a replacement mount for the alternator, Most of the kits I've seem on eBay are for driver side mounting, or need to use the bolted -on adapter mounted on the head to correct alignment.
