The Flareside was killing me in fuel working, needed the entire exhaust system rebuilt, and a set of tires, not to mention a bunch of other little stuff.
I finally found the Ranger I wanted, 92, 2.3 5 speed XLT. I had one just like this (it was bronze though). One of the best trucks I ever had! I ran it 250,000 miles and other than maintenance I only replaced the U joints and a TPS! It ran like new when I traded it in a on a new Ranger still.
This little truck is actually alot nicer than it looks, runs like new, tight, solid, interior looks new still, A/C blows lce cold! The flaked paint is pretty typical for it's age (crappy factory paint), as is the rust over the rear wheels, shame somebody dinged up the bed rail so bad. Has near new tires too.
It was obviously VERY well cared for mechanically, appropriate amount of shiny new parts on her.
I already modded some better mirrors to the to the door brackets (Ranger "flag" mirrors suck!), pulled off the broken bug shield, and readjusted the front bumper (not bent just crooked).
These are really hard to find around here, I will be coating the underside (no rust holes under there), and fixing the body and will paint her. Need to make her last!
I could probably find a 93 or newer but I really like the 2nd generation Rangers the best.
I traded straight up for the Flareside.
This is a phone pic, I'll get some better ones.
This was taken about 5 minutes after I drove her off the lot;

I had two of them that I bought new. An '85 Ranger S (I think that stood for STRIPPED because it had nothing but a heater). I also had an '88 Ranger long bed XLT that I kept about a year. Burned a quart of oil every 1000 miles and Ford said it was normal consumption

I tried to figure out a way to keep Iris,
just couldn't make the money work putting gas in her everyday (about $250 a week!).
I also DID NOT want payments on a Ranger, I own it free & clear by trading the F 150.
Would've been fun to fix the Flareside up - great DD/mild hotrod.
I am already thinking a set of charcoal or black spoke late Stang 17" wheels, a small body colored air dam, and a rollup (need it out of the way for working) hard tonneu would look really cool! Wonder if I can still get the factory stripes - I like them on these.
I will add a lower back pressure exhaust, bump the fuel pressure up 3lbs, and get a K&N type filter for it (these mods will improve the MPG by about 2-3 miles per gallon).
