64 manual steering gear, rebuildable?

Post by rick64 »

Does anyone out there know if the steering gear on a 64 f100 2wd and manual steering can be rebuilt. I just purchased a 64 slick and the steering gear has no more adjustment left in it. The steering is a little loose (or scary as can be) and I have adjusted the box to the limit. I have also replaced the tie rod ends and just ordered a drag link. If the link does not fix it I need to address the steering gear again. Any advise would be great.

Thanks

I'm guessing finding a better one is the route to go...

Thanks for the info. I will most likely be pulling it apart and cleaning it up. I will post what I find. Maybe with pics...

Rick. Yes they can be rebuilt, but getting the re-circulating balls in properly is a bit of a chore. Call Dennis Carpenter and Rick at Carolina Classics. I think both places have or had a trade out policy. And even if they still don't they can tell you where to get your rebuild kit.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.

For now, you might unscrew the cap on it and pump it full of chassis lube, not gear lube. Helped mine a bunch.

On mine it was the bronze bushing on the side that the shaft come out of and goes through the frame . I had a really scary ride till i fixed it . To see if thats the problem have someone turn the wheel back and forth in the play and look at the pitman arm . See if its woblin around .
