radio speaker & carpet
the last 2 trips i made to LMC are very disappointing. the first about 2 weeks ago was to buy the speaker. according to LMC catalog "it will provide you with the best possible sound from your original speaker location". "and is already wired to plug into your radio instantly". I call B.S.. the plug is no where near ready to plug in although no problem to fix but they play fast and loose with the truth. the speaker will not fit in the stock location. the factory speaker is a 5x7 and there replacement is a 6x9. there is no way to make that work with out altering the dash with some holes outside the original grate. I took it back extremely dissatisfied for their wasting my time and money. BTW you can buy some speakers at Bestbuy that will fit but you have to buy 2. they require altering some and gluing some of the parts together and drilling some new holes in the plastic speaker retainers to match the radio grill but it does work and does fit without altering the dash. 2 days ago i went to get a carpet for the 1965 i am working on. it was a 4 speed truck now with a c6. high hump. i.e. the removeable transmission cover. i got the correct part # and explained to the counter once again how the carpet lacks an inch reaching the kick panels on both sides. i decided to take a chance and buy the carpet because i want to keep working on the truck and that is the next step. when i form the carpet to the floor contour the carpet lacks 2" on each side of reaching the panels. absolutely unacceptable to me. i put carpet in a 1976 f100 last year and the carpet fit. no issues. the problem is with the SLICK carpets. the carpet was bunched where glued to the backing and there is no way of fixing this to look right without cutting and gluing etc. i decided to search this site and found auto interiors and called them. told them of the issues i was having at LMC. they also sell ACC carpet. the same manufacturer that LMC uses. she was nice and gave me the number to call at ACC carpets. i called them and i did not get to talk to a tech . only a receptionist who has never installed a carpet in her life. they told me to take my pictures to LMC and speak to them about it. i have another truck with the same carpet installed with the same floor that has the same short side issues. i am going to drive down there in the truck with the carpet with the problem. are the rest of you installing carpet in your SLICKS having this same problem. are you just accepting this as the quality of the S**t that you get nowdays and install it with the floor not fully covered. the fit on my ranger is so poor that the carpet causing accelerator problems and you have to push against the carpet as well as the throttle return spring and after an hour or so your foot becomes tired. does any one have a solution to this carpet fit problem. is their any other carpet manufacturers besides ACC? thanks for any answers.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
well that is not surprising to me.
i personally do not do carpet in trucks, i like the factory rubber floor mats. both of the ones i bought fit fine (i got them from classic truck in OKC) but they are for 2wd f100/250 trucks and therefore i had to alter them where the steering column hole is as the f350/4x4 columns are different. the top floor mat hides the cut but still its annoying to have to alter something you buy that supposedly fits.
i would drive to LMC and make them offer you a solution
also i have a question as to how much sound deadener or pad you put in before the carpet as this raises the carpet at the hump, pulling it away from the sides.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
the carpet has the pad glued to it. only on the front. i was planning on doing a test fit and locating the position of the pad on the carpet and installing roll insulation on the rest of the floor and up the back where the gas used to reside. i have spent a great deal of time working on this truck and am more than a little particular. i want to be able to listen to the radio and want the cab quiet. the problem i think is the poor manufacturing tolerances. the last 4 or 5 slick carpets i bought have all had this issue. it is getting worse. i have had this discussion at the store counter at LMC on more than 1 occasion. it is only 20 miles to the counter for me so it is at least convenient. they leave a foot of extra carpet going up the back of the cab which is totally worthless to me. i have to cut it off. they screw me out of 2 inches of material on each side from the front of the kick panel to the floor trim, maybe 18 inches long. and then i throw away 4 or 5 square feet from the back. makes no sense to produce this kind of POS. the manufacturers and resellers don't listen or they don't care.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
has anyone installed a acc carpet in a 1965 or 1966 LMC part # either 49-5826 or 49-5828? that is the carpet that i am having an issue with. i installed a carpet in a 1976 last year and it fit find. those 2 carpets will not cover the floor and leave the gap at the kick panels as i described. i have installed numerous over the last few years and everyone has left the same result. LMC's 49-5843 listed as a carpet for models with a c6 and years from 67-72 might be a possible fit. i am looking for a carpet that fits and covers the floor. tomorrow i am going to drive my 1966 ranger down to LMC and show them what the carpet fits like. the carpet in that truck i installed a few years ago and decided to ignore the gap and finish the job. after drilling the holes for the seats and console there is no returning it.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
Maybe You Could Use Some Tack-Strip A "Kicker" To Stretch The Carpet Into The Corners. LOL..
Re: radio speaker & carpet
A possible solution is to add another layer of padding on the floorboard.
The carpet coming off the hump will not go as low and there may be enough slack to pull it over to the edge.
I do not know what material the carpet is made from, but you may be able to wet the carpet and use some clamps to get it to stretch.
This doesnt fix the problem with poor quality workmanship, but if you want carpet it may be what you have to do to make it work.
Im also a rubber floor mat guy in trucks.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
i personally think it sucks. i want to order something and have it work as advertised. especially if it is u.s. made.
i am tired of products made to be sold and not used. half the crap you buy is only good until the package is opened. after that, it is crap. sell me a good product for a few dollars more that fits right and will last and i'll be happy as a pig in shit.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
i took the carpet back to LMC today and after studying their catalog, i decided i wanted to try 49-5843 which is the 67-72 application for trucks with c6 transmission. i compared that carpet to the correct carpet i brought back on their showroom floor. it looked like it was a little wider in the front so i did the paperwork and drove home. no management was there today so i could get noone to look at the installation in my 1966 ranger detailing the problem with the carpet. a complete waste of time as the counter was busy with only 2 people working the counter. but i got started on the installation and it looks like it will work, however a lot of material will have to be trimmed off the front to fit under the firewall cover.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
the only reason i use them is that they are close. oreilly's is about the same. the next time i order a carpet i will use the new "wrong" part number to order the correct carpet that fits and order it on-line and save $45 or so and save 100 miles or driving back and forth and a couple of hours. at least i got a carpet that fits. i guess most people anymore just put up with the crap and accept it. i have a hard time accepting the new standards employed by corporate america while the individual has to do everything right to avoid getting screwed by those that play by a different set of rules.ezernut9mm wrote:well, thank the gods it only took you two trips and blank stares from the counter personnel jim. imagine what folks half a country away have to deal with.

i dont like buying anything i cant touch first or know beforehand the quality of the item.
one big issue is most everyone wants a deal, and most are willing to sacrifice quality for a few cents or dollars. if nobody bought the inferior junk it would not be for sale long.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
Gotta remember that not many venders even offer anything for our trucks. There just isnt enough money in it.
Its a great plan to not buy the carpet, the downside is that if the manufacturer isnt making money, they will just drop the product altogether.
In the case of the LMC carpet, if the 67+ carpet works, pass that along to LMC and let them figure out what to do.
After all they want to sell carpet, not have carpet returned.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
yeah, but their track record of actually changing their catalog to reflect the bad application years is not very good. i, along with others, have brought stuff like this to their attention and the catalogs remain unchanged.

Re: radio speaker & carpet
can't help you a whole lot with the carpet but I had the same experience with the speaker issue. couldn't find the correct fit at any of the China auto parts stores. I did find one from Classic Car Speakers (http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm). If your truck is a '65, the 5"x7" oval 8-10ohm $39.95 is what you want (scroll about half way down). It fits perfect in the dash. Not sure about the plug to the radio. That's usually an easy fix. They were also easy to deal with when I had questions before I ordered.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
