Front Springs

Post by bmcgc »

Im out of state for the holiday.

As luck would have it I found some suspension parts I want.

The truck is being supported by stands under the frame, the front suspension off the ground.

I have never disassembled a twin I beam suspension.

Is it safe to remove the bolt on the bottom of the springs, or is it under tension?

If I can remove it what size socket and wrench do I need, I will have to buy some tools.

Tomorrow is my only chance at this.

No problem with my 65 F100. 1 1/8 socket and a good breaker bar

take the shocks off, the top spring strap off, and the i beam will drop low enough to take all the tension off the springs.

I figured it out.

The part that stumped me was the double nut on the I beam that is hidden under the cup.

I had all my weight on a 4 foot breaker bar trying to turn the bolt head from the bottom.

I beat myself half to death getting the thing apart. The worse of it was the waterpump that fell off the fender, grazed my head and landed on my left hand.

A lot of work for a sway bar and mounts.

Front sway bar is worth the effort. Heat helps on those huge nuts. While your there new bushings in the I Beam are a good investment. Keep track of shims and spacers if present and left/right spring on some trucks there are not the same.

The right side came off pretty easy, the truck had a big oil leak and everything was lubed up. It was messy but easy to remove on that side.

Im going to install new coils when I do the brake swap, so I will do all at once.

Will my 75 donor arms have the notch for the sway bar bracket?
