Truck offered to me

Post by Godlover »

My brother in law offered me his families old farm truck but is it worth going 350 miles or having it shipped? I don't have a truck or trailer and figure it might be too big for a typical car trailer. I think it might be a f350. He is supposed to get me more info.

Get it. You can probably make it fit a U-Haul car hauler, just let the outer wheel hang off the sides and the inner wheels ride in the track.

Mark, asking these guys if you should get another truck is like walking into a bar and asking the bartender if you should get another drink. LOL. Looks like it could be a good project

I think that truck would be worth the effort to haul it home. I bet it would ride nice on a regular car hauling trailer.

Where is it and where do you live Godlover?

I live in Newton, Iowa. The truck is in Geddes, South Dakota. I need to sell my 65 so I have room! I have 2 62 Unibodies and my 65 F100. I don't have to hurry to get the one in South Dakota. He has been offering it to me for over a year. He said it was a 53 but the grill looks like a 55. Not sure. He is supposed to take more pictures!

I have hauled and, had shipped alot worse.I would definatly go for it!There are not alot of them left and it sounds like you family trusts you to take care of it.That alone would be enough for me to go for it.

Truck's not anywhere near me then.

I think you are right on the year being '55, unless grille's been changed.

U-haul may not rent a car hauler for the F350. It probably will depend mostly on the local franchise holder and/or availability of specifications for that old a truck. There may other local rental options, however.
it's a fairly heavy old truck; Brian's suggestion holds merit since that allows you to load the truck backward if needed for weight distribution as well as clearance. The wheelbase is also going to be a factor in attempting to rent a car hauler; most are 16-18 ft. Again, backing the truck on trailer may allow a little extra room without an excessive tongue load. Just make sure you have adequate clearance between the two vehicles for turning, especially off-camber turns such as into a driveway.
Looks well worth the effort, IMO; even if you ended up paying commercial shipping rates you would still be getting the truck for little over scrap value.

Way cool truck. Get it as soon as you can! I drove 400 miles today to look at a '53. Sadly it was all rust and bondo. Hard to find one thats solid and original.

They delivered Chris's Crew Cab on a U-Haul trailer by pulling the ramps out and letting the rear wheels rest on them. Not sure how "legal" that was but it worked.

Indeed UHaul is anal retentive about car haulers...in my experience they won't just rent you a trailer...they want to know whats going on it, and what you are hauling with...For the record, a 66 long box JUST fits on one of their trailers...a DRW vehicle will not (properly) fit...but what UHaul doesn't know won't hurt 'em...just tell 'em its a "Fiesta"...cause it WILL be a party after all...

I agree, they don't see what you put on it. You pick it up empty and drop if off empty.

My Plymouth took up almost all of one of U-hauls biggest trailers. But I'd guess that F350 would fit, possibly with single wheels in the back. We got a great deal on the renal, the U-haul lot we picked it up from had too many car haulers and cut us a break as long as we returned it to different U-haul lot.

The U-Haul Haulers are pretty short, here's how my LB Ranger fit on one.

But they sure do pull nice.
