Rear glass uninstall/reinstall

Post by bmcgc »

Ive got everything I need to install the new headliner.

The rear glass is in good shape, the gasket sucks, so since the head liner installs behind the gasket, I ordered a new one.

Im planning on doing the window and head liner tomorrow.

My helper is the misses.

Wish me luck.

Have you done one of these before? If not, best research it first. Things needed, 3m glass caulk sealer. If you don't want it to leak , it's best to use this stuff. Bear in mind it is nasty stuff, much like the original. Tube is about 13$. One tube will do front and back glass with a little left over. Dish soap diluted with some water, and applied with a rag or some kind of applicator. Rubber slides a lot more easily with it , without it, most likely will not get it in. 1/4 inch cord or something about that size to pull the rubber over the lip. Other advice, includes cleaning off the burrs around frame area. Ford or the workers doing the spot welds couldn't care less how rough this ended up. Makes the job easier if it is smooth. Problem with filing off burrs is then it needs rust protection. Por 15 and a little paint over that. Since it gets covered, paint does not have to match, but it all has to dry first. You might be able to leave the Por 15 without painting over it. I've been meaning to post the numbers for the 3m sealing product for the glass rubber. I will do so today.

Ive installed glass before. Flat glass is pretty easy.

I haven't ever used sealer.

Does the sealer go in the glass groove or the cab groove?

Did Ford use a sealer?

I've never used sealer either....no leaks whatsoever. I guess it couldn't hurt. They must make it for a reason, right?

Question: My 61 uni (small window) came to me without a headliner. I now have the back glass out. Was planning to put it back in after paint but before I installed the headliner. If I do that will I have to pull the glass again?

Several questions from different members on my post. First the back glass is a more of a booger than the front glass. This is because the back glass has a lot of rubber on the inside. If prep is done right and you have help it is a lot easier to install. Help is a must, and experienced help is best. I put the sealer in the groove first . Warning, put in to much and it will ooze out and make a big mess. Yes Ford recommended the sealer, although they no longer supply it. I use it on both grooves. As to the headliner, it goes behind the rubber lip on the window seal. I wouldn't think it necessary to remove the window to install, and have done it without removing the window. Any way you do it, messing with the headliner is a pain, but installing it first would be a little less complicated, I think.

I wish you luck..

I've done one install before and couldn't do the 2nd install (planets were not in aligment). I had the glass guy do the rear window when he was doing the front. :) I have never used any sealer and no leaks. :2cents:

Drop by a glass shop sometime and pick up a few "spoons".

Spoons are flat plastic tools that the shops use when working with rubber and interior parts.

They are a must have IMO.

A shop will give you a couple or charge you a couple bucks for them. They are a consumable item in a glass shop.

Didn't get to it this weekend. We got caught up in yard work and house projects.

After thinking things over here is my new plan.

Im going to light up the gas burner and bring a pot of water to near boiling, shove the gasket in and heat it up so its nice and pliable.

I think I will install the glass from the inside, my thought is that it will be easier to wrestle the gasket over the lip from the outside vice the thicker part of the gasket from the inside. Thoughts/Opinions?

Yuppers, that's the way you wanna do it. Just an FYI you can use an aerosol type glass cleaner for your lube. I put my headliner in after the fact, its a real pain getting it tucked under the rubber but doable.
