Doh!

Post by Oregoon »

Registered my truck yesterday... According to the title, it's a '66. VIN says the same. And here I thought it's a '65... Listening to PO: Bad idea!

Also, I'd been working off the assumption that all AE blocks are 240s and that all 240s have twin-groove pulleys. According to some info I found posted on Fordsix.com, my C5AE is a factory 300, and measuring my stroke confirmed this, despite my twin-groove pulley. Furthermore, I pulled my valve cover to do a gasket job and things looked really clean in there, so it may have been rebuilt at some point, and it may have been a 240 to start... As I understand it, Ford used either block (240/300) as the application demanded, and casting numbers be damned.

So, regardless of it's past, I measured the stroke, decoded my vin, and I have a '66 F100 with a 300, a 3 on the tree, and a 3.50 rear end.

And that's awesome!

Warm up that six a little (header, maybe some Chevy rockers, small 4bbl and an HEI), fix the rust in the floorboards (there's very little), update the brakes, drive it everyday...

I'd like to paint it that lovely old turquoise color and find some period correct tires. Not sure I want to lower it--probably won't.

Yeah, I thought about lowering mine too, but I guess F250s are really difficult.

Excellent idea. Theys be a wealth of information on the Ford sixes that you can tap into. The very notorious 300 is by far the longest reigning Ford motor ever built, and for good reason. Youve got yerself a good combo there. As for lowering the 250? One of our members lowered his and it is super nice. :2cents:

You did read that correctly, though I bought it off my oldest friend in the world, and he owns an operates a custom shop here in Portland. He could've flipped it for three times what he sold it to me for, or done a little body work and sold it for five times the amount.

However, he's been listening to me blather about 300-cid Fords for the last 20 years, and he's well aware of how much I love the slick 'sixties. So when he came upon my truck, he passed it along.

I am deeply in his debt, and like a good friend, he won't hear a word about it. I'll buy the beers for the next while, though!
