engine preference??
I have one of each all within 200 dollars of running. Any thoughts? opinions?
Re: engine preference??
What kind of use? Is mileage a concern? Pulling a trailer/hauling loads? What truck?

Re: engine preference??
I have a 390 with a c6 in my 74 f100. It'll pull anything you put behind it. The best mileage I've ever squeezed out of it was 13 on the highway driving 55-60. I usually average about 9-10. Its a fun engine and will move when you open it up
My uncle has a 223 in his 63 but it has a 3 spd. Not alot of power but he gets upwards of 20 mpg puttering around town. Doesn't haul anything really with it. Maybe some lawn mowers or something from the lumber store.

Re: engine preference??
We all know that the reason your uncle's '63 doesn't seem to have power is because of the 3-speed transmission. For the use you mentioned, I'm sure it does the job fine. But if he wanted to use it for heavier use, he'd be "riding the clutch".ThinLizzy13 wrote:I have a 390 with a c6 in my 74 f100. It'll pull anything you put behind it. Remember, the 'workability' of a truck is alot about gearing.
'bout 100 years ago, I owned/operated a '63 with a 223 6-cylinder F100...but it was backed by a T-18 4-speed. It had a fairly low rear gear ratio (typical for a 6-cyl truck) AND it had the T-18 4-speed transmission. I used to tell my friends that my truck could climb trees if I could get traction! Then I owned a '65 F250 with a 240 6-cylinder backed by a 3 in-the-tree. I was forever smelling the clutch - I HATED that transmission! When I moved to a 390" with a T-18, I was in heaven!

Re: engine preference??
Yer gonna get better mileage with the inline 6 and 3-spd combo, maybe 15 mpg and up. But you need to ask yourself 'What' you really want yer slick to do. With me it was easy because i wanted a truck that can pull a camper and haul one of my bikes. Enter 'Limestone' my 1966 F-250, 352 motor and NP435 4-spd transmission with the Dana 60 axle and stout 4.10 gears. She will pull anything behind it, i have no doubt. But.........at a cost. Gas mileage sucks, 10 -12 mpg is all i can squeeze out of it and the old gal rides like a covered wagon. As it was stated, its all about the gearing. I've seen six bangers pull tree stumps out of the ground, mated to the right transmission and lower gears. With the 352 and 390 motors you wont have much of a problem with pulling anything, as they are torque monsters and can handle heavy loads with a minimum of fuss. On the other hand, my 61 half ton uni got great gas mileage with the inline 240 and three spd combo, but that was back in a day when gas was cheap and plentiful. She wasnt much for pulling compared to a low geared big block fe like the one i have now. The ball is in your park. Choose wisely.............
Long live the 352

I vote for gm 5.3. Basically a baby corvette engine. Put a big cam and valve springs and tune. You'll be making good power and mileage. Honestly sick of smelling gas. Yeah it'll be more work and $$. I know there'll be some gm haters out there but who cares!

Re: engine preference??
sorry guys I should have said 223 with a 3 speed but I really didn't think there was another option ha. Well I appreciate all the advice! I will be using it mainly as a daily driver and play toy. So gas mileage and power are both things I am taking into account. I keep thinking that the 302 (5.0 high output) would be perfect if I can get a harness for the fuel injection but then we start talking about more money and wiring headaches!! thanks again for your opinions.

LS is 4 wires after a harness diet. 5.0 efi is 80's tech. Just sayin
Re: engine preference??
Must have missed that option on the choices !
And BTW, "4 wires" is a slight over-simplification, IMO.

I'm definitely not a gm hater , I run a trio of them hauling grain...
But I'd rather run a 223 with a burnt valve & cracked manifold
Until I found a job and made some money
Than put a Chebby in there...
