8 lugs are better than 5 - F 250 disc brakes

Post by Bill W »

So, i wanted disc brakes on my f250. autozone had one in stock!

Well, then i had to fab up some brackets

then i had some brackets made up out of 1/4 inch cold rolled steel!
Image
with little tabs for spacing...

Image
after i drilled and taped out some holes for the caliper pins i painted them red.
Image
reinstall rotor and caliper!
Image
install brake hose to the stock location.
Image
and were almost done!

after some new hard lines and a new disc/drum master cyl I now have disc brakes on the front of my 63 f250 and i'm not afraid to drive it in traffic. I think it worked out Slick!.

Patterns are free for the asking.

just be ready to put a few chevy parts on your truck scared.gif

mid 70's chev 4x4 rotor with matching caliper and brake hose,

the expensive part was having the hub machined to fit the rotor...and cold rolled steel is 33 bucks a square ft for 1/4 inch stuff.

Sure! i would be honored. i can add more info as people have questions, but honestly... if i had to do it again, i would have the speedwaymotors 5 lug kits on my truck and swap to a 9 inch out back. Alan hit the nail on the head (I'm Nuts) lol

I think the eight lug wheels look great on a 250. Good call and great job.

Bill: Nice job. Very Slick! I would like to get a pattern from you. Will PM you with my info. This gives you the same bolt pattern as the 8-lug stock Ford wheels? I like the 8-lugs on my F250, but would like to have discs. Thanks

Sarg, i dont think it will, same thing you can do to swap to 5 lug disc brakes on the twin I's will work for you, just find a 73-79 f250 with all the parts you need and follow Dwight's write up for the f100 swap. if you need a link i have it book marked.

Gotcha, I am sure I can find it. It is not an immediate concern, just something I eventually want to do.

Well, that was a pretty SLICK brake swap :):)

Has anyone tried something similar on a straight axle F350? I ask because I have had one "Expert" on another forum say it cannot be done.
But I suspect it may be more about finding the suitable donor parts....but it may also require going to a different bolt circle (wheel stud pattern), which would complicate the matter, as then you would be switching wheels, ans to avoid having a different pattern on the rear, you would then need to redrille the rear axles/drums as well.....
