Bench seat install

Post by 1965fordf100 »

I just scored a 2nd row seat out of a 01 Tahoe and I'm going modify the mounting to get it bolted up in the '65. Has anyone else on here done this previously that would have some good tips? And yes I know it's a X Brand seat...but leather and center fold down arm rest is very nice to have if you ask me :)

General fitment can be a real issue. There is not a lot of room due to the steering wheel size/location. The seats I've used are from 90's ford pickups, but I generally shorten my steering columns for comfort.

As stated room is tight.
I modified a set of 20/40/20 seats out of a 2011 dodge truck. not an easy task. The floors on our trucks do not make it easy, and chances are you will have to relocate your gas tank.
I placed a piece of square tubing across the center hump. and measured down to floor location where each of the feet will touch. I then measured up from the feet on the seat,to a common plane.
I took some graff paper and laid out the floor, and laid out the seat above it. figured out how much to cut out of the seat legs, below the runners at each point.
Then I bolted attachment points to the floor and tacked the runners to those.
Take it back out, cover the seat well and weld them together.
Without runners, you will have sever access issues.

I'm not too worried about depth of the seat. I've already eliminated the gas tank in the cab and did a mustang tank out back under the bed. Height issues are my main concern. After looking at and studying this seat for a couple hours I may have a general plan of attack, but any hints or tricks will be welcomed for sure

Unless you can cut the seat mounts lower I don't think they will fit and not be too tall , or put you too close to the wheel. :2cents:

I would suggest that you take the p.s. seat and test fit as is, paying attention to the clearance at the back of the cab. Keeping the original backrest angle will possibly result in a seating position too close to the column/ dash. Removing the headrests or rear window will help somewhat. If you have a tilt column and no tall drivers, you may be just fine.

If you don't use the factory mounts and make your own, you can make them fit in the truck. You probably will have to lose the headrests.
Here is the problem that I see and it may not be a problem for you. I put seats out of an 01 F150 extended cab in my truck. The problem with them is that the backs of the seats are too thick and push you too far forward towards the steering wheel and pedals. Your seat backs look to be about as thick as mine are.
I'm 5'8" and 155 lbs. and I am a little bit too far forward for the throttle and brake pedals. I have a tilt column so it isn't a problem. I can live with mine because I don't drive it everyday. If I did I would change the seats to an early to mid nineties truck seat because the backs are about 3" thinner.

Yep gonna have to make some brackets for sure...started hacking and chopping already...Looks like it's gonna be easiest to do in 2 sections, the back then the seat bottoms. The seat is designed for the bottoms to lift up and forward the the backs can tilt forward. Going to try to retain that as much as possible. If not then it will be a fixed seat.
