Getting harder to find

Post by Country »

Dont know about your neck of the woods but these trucks are getting more difficult to find. If you do find a good parts truck its either rusted beyond use or they want an arm and a leg for the thing. 10 years ago you could throw a rock and hit a truck from any direction. The last 5 years they seem to be harder to find.
What are you guys seeing out in your parts of the country.

You can thank the high price of scrap metal for a lot of that. I used to have a bunch of stuff scouted out for future use, now the woods are starting to get pretty thin. You can also thank the speculators who think that just because it says Ford on it that it is worth a small fortune, never mind that all four sides of it have rotted off!

i have come across three slicks on craigslist/local car trader magazine in the past year.

-a 63(?) f250 wrong bed, y block 4 speed 4wd. good runner and driver, but the body and frame were beyond toast. wanted like
$3500 firm.

-a '64 f100 shortbed, 223/3 speed. ran like crap, filled with bondo and jury rigs, rusted chassis, and found out on the test drive that the brakes weren't really functional. wanted around $4000.

-a '64 f100 shortbed 292/3 speed, runningish, driving, working brakes, as little rot as i've ever seen. $4200. bought it.

other than that, i see '48-'52s around that are never for sale, a lot of bumpsides, dentsides, and a few 53-56 almost all with sbc's (ugh). never have seen a 57-60 i don't think. they are all getting very rare.

Not easy to find parts trucks at all in the yards anymore. Used to be able to find at least three or four in a yard visit; maybe a dozen in a day in multiple yards, but now you're lucky to find even one in multiple yards. Of course a lot of yards have closed here too. Used to score a lotta good parts in the old days, and have a helluva good day doing so. I guess its a good thing so much is reproduced nowadays.

Sorry, my fault. I've bought three Slicks in Arkansas in the past few years, (plus one in Alabama, one in Mississippi and one in Texas). Like you said, there used to be lots in Arkansas, but none were to be found in Louisiana. I blamed our Slick shortage on scrappers a few years ago. Outlandish prices for modest (and not worth it) trucks seem to be the rule these days. I don't currently have the money to buy anyway.

Grits; here I am working my butt off to maintain the Texas numbers; now I find that not only Tom, but you and Steve; are making un-announced raids on our rightful supply! :P
No wonder it's been years since I've found one bearing the "Built in Texas by Texans" sticker. I guess now even that distinction has passed on to Toyota!
In some ways, the high scrap prices pretty well guarantee me a break-even transaction in my price range; but I certainly pay for it in reduced availability. Not to mention the resultant, increased pricing of any product utilizing metal.

I was buying these every couple of weeks for awhile. Now I don't see many for sale near me in Cincinnati and when they are they are overpriced and or rusted out. I really wish they would start making patch panels for our beds grrr.

Well I guess I'm not losing my mind. I tell ya I counted 16 different car shows on cable tv. I figure between the steel prices and car shows these cheap ole trucks aren't cheap anymore. Enjoy them know because its my opinion the price of a good truck is going to only continue to go up.

I have a difficult time finding any here in central Texas. All are rusted or over "customized".

I wish someone made reproduction hoods.

these are still all over everywhere in Oregon and Washington.

I bought my 63 from a guy i went to high school with. He told me he was going to haul to the scrapper if he couldn't sell it. He fell on hard financial times and sold it to me.

Ive considered picking up a 60 as well. There is something about the fridge I like. Can only do one project and even that it is on hold till further notice.
The months may change, but I am always APRIL

The problem with slicks in the Pacific Northwest, is all of the rain we have 9 months out of the year. Any project truck usually has a lot of rust. I know, my truck is one of them!
