clutch vacuum leak?
clutch vacuum leak?
Good Morning!
My 66 SWB I240 3 on the tree is making a noise when clutch is engaged, and still a little while not engaged.
It sounds like leaking air, but not a whistle or anything. Just like a "ssshhhhhhh" noise. This sounds is very noticeable while clutch is engaged.
This is my first Slick so I'm not real familiar with the set up. It seems to shift fine, and the clutch works. Just that loud noise.
Any idea what it could be? Vacuum?
Thanks!

Do you have a vacuum booster?

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
dwjones, I do not think so. Where would it be located?

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
it would be on the fire wall behind the master cyl. A large round black thing. Also, any sort of vacuum leak will cause your engine to preform poorly. How's your idle?

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
My idle is bad. Also when trying to drive it sputters a lot. However this comes and goes. Glad you brought it up, I have replaced all pugs, rotors, cap, wires, new fuel line, fuel filter, ignition coil....yeah everything trying to figure this out.
I will see if I can locate the vacuum booster.
Dumb question, will the noise be coming from the booster if it's leaking?
Thanks!

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
Get yourself a length of flexible tubing, one that will fit into your ear, listen for a leak around the base of carb and each intake port,if any are found tighten up the bolts. If you do have a brake booster and it's working properly your brake pedal will depress slightly on start up,if not you should have a very stiff pedal all the time.another thing to check is the vacuum advance, remove your dist.cap and rotor, disconnect the vacuum line ,if rubber slide it off the steel line.If it goes to the carb. do it there.Next, and excuse the phrasing, suck on it really hard, you'll be looking for movement inside the dist.If you see something move you're good there.

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
dwjones you were right on the money. My distro is shot. I opened the cap to perform the "sucking" test.
I noticed that the spring and pin were broke. So I will replace the entire unit. I was thinking abut installing a Duraspark II from a ford Fairlane, do you it that requires anything special to install? Or is it a direct fit?

Just saw your last message,I'm not sure about mixing parts.Check out the work that Bobenhotep has posted about the dura-spark,he seems to know a lot about them.Where do you live in the southwest?
Good luck

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
Sounds like it's coming from under the dash around the pedals? More than likely the brake booster is going bad as the air intake for the booster is where the push rod goes through the firewall and is where you will hear the "whoosh"/

Re: clutch vacuum leak?
Yeah that is correct Fred. Only thing is I don't have a brake booster.
Any thing else it might be?
