Just joined this forum and a question about fuel senders

Post by fordautowrecking »

I found this forum off a link on a MSN group. I have a 66 F250 I got several years ago out of nevada. Finally this summer I am getting it running. Its a nearly perfect body I mounted on a 78 F250 4x4 chassis.
460/C6/NP205. I am building a custom wiring harness for it, and I will make a custom aluminum dash with VDO gauges for it.
My question is about fuel sending units, and how they are calibrated resistance. I am ordering the VDO gauges kit from Summit and they list three different guages depending on the sending unit resistance signal.
0-100 ohm. 70-0 ohms then 270-70 or so, the catalog does not spec Ford GM or chrysler type.
So which does the Ford use?

I cannot measure the original sending unit on the truck. the tank was already gone when I got the truck. and the 2 tanks on the 78 chassis under it are inaccesable. the bed is already bolted down and set.

thanks for the help.
I'll post up some pics of the truck in a album. in the next day or so...

thanks

Dane.
You are correct.
Ford and Chrysler use the same basic sending units.
8-12 ohms full and 78 ohms empty.
I bought an aftermarket Autometer gauge to use with a standard Mustang gas tank sender, but had to specify the 10-78 ohm unit.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Good thanks for the info
I looked up the VDO gauges and they don't make a 10-80 ohm in the royale series I want.
auto meter does but they are much more expensive.

welcome.gif Welcome to the group Dane. We can use another 4x4 conversion here. Is your's a long or short bed?

If you dont mind me asking what kind of engineer are you, we have a few of those here too.

So where in UT are you located...?

I bought this 66 as a towed abandoned truck from Pahrump NV.
$500 for it..
not a speck of rust on it. and the sheetmetal is near perfect straight.
but it had the long bed stepside bed on it.. and I wanted a styleside. I found one of those.. but the bed is rusty, one of the jobs I need to do is remove the bed itself and replace it with a nice straight one from a 71 truck. that will be ALOT of spot weld cuttting..
Also this bed has the contractor box on the right side...
I need to shorten it's depth.. the 70's 4x4 frames are wider than the 60's
so to center the whole bed and make the bed bolts line up I need to mod the box.
What else... the front rad support bolts don't line up quite right...
more mod and fab time...
custom wiring harness, adapted from a 68 galaxie
the original was a hacked up burned up mess...
power windows adapted from a 65 T-bird rear window assembly.
has anyone made an overhead console?

Does ANYBODY know where I can get those cool zippered door inserts,??

having a little storage compartment in the door is neat! defintely one of Fords really better ideas. mine just had the block off plates.

Ummm what other questions can I throw out there....
Does the cross member in the roof actually touch the roof sheetmetal?
theres about a 1 1/2 gap between them on mine . I might have to set up a jack a force it up.

If anyones interested.. I suppose I should post it to the for sale board I know of a 66 short wide F100 that belongs to a friend.. 6 cyl. body dented but no rust, custom cab. been lowered many inches already. I think he wants $1000 for it but he'll deal

thanks

The whole rust free part of your truck sure takes away a lot of the bad part of restoring one of these. :thumright: I can't remember if that cross brace in the roof is supposed to touch the top, one of these guys will know though. :D
