up above 10,000 feet

Post by ICEMAN6166 »

how many of you have taken your truck 2 miles above sea level :?:
i did it twice over the winter with no problems , a couple of the steeper hills felt like i had the choke pulled a bit but then i never messed with the carb since moving here.

Never had that problem. I'm only about 10' above sea level.

I envy that 10 feet, Lonnie! when the tide comes in, the sewers quit working here!

I have been wondering about how much adjustment would be needed. My truck started out near sea level, then I moved to New Mexico, and now I am about 4500 above sea level. I have read that the YF carbs are good to about 5000 feet. I have to cross mountains to get to White Sands, and much of the rest of the state, and I was wondering if the carb would magically crap out at over 5000 feet, or if I would be okay.

at high altitudes the air is thinner, therefore the mixture is richer.
one can lean out the mix but then if you get it too lean worse problems can occur than gas mileage. i would rather run the old y on the rich side. its fine at 7K and unless i was living way up high i would not mess with it any.

I bought my truck in Seattle and drove it to Colorado where I'm at close to 8000'. The only thing I have noticed is that I need to let the truck warm up longer or it can stall after the first stop. It's probably not running at optimum but I'm going to wait until the engine gets re-built in June or July.

Before tearing it down for restoration I ran my F-250 from Hilo 5 ft above sea level, to the summet of Mauna Kea 14,000 ft above sea level, back down to Kailua Kona 3ft above sea level..... All in the same day. I had to get out and play with the carb a few times, but she made the trip just fine.
