66 wiring schematic

Post by ezernut9mm »

anyone have a good hi res schematic of the exterior lights and turn signals?
no matter what i do i only have left rear turn signal. the right side has the bright filament lit up all the time. something aint right. the po used a 77 column and wired it to the 66 wiring. i have a good 66 t/s switch with all wiring but can't get a good enough diagram to see wire colors etc.
all the front stuff works as it should.
wiring is fun.

sure is, and i especially enjoy plotting revenge against those who cobble it together.

heres a 67 should be real close, i dont remember there being many differences other than the 4 way flasher

Let me know what you need! I doubt I can get any good pics of the'77 column and spaghetti bowl under Spot's dash, but I should be able to help with what goes where. Only major difference between '65 and '66 is the 4-ways, to my knowledge.
I have the '66 wiring manual, just don't know where !

No change on right rear with turn signal lever on between key on and key off? Four ways working ?

I got a wiring diagram from someone on this site when I hooked mine up. I'm thinking it was Uncle skip. It showed how to wire up the 77 column to a slick, I'll look and see if I can find it. Tom

none of the 4 way wiring is hooked up. this truck has the knob on the dash for it and the three wires are just hanging there.
all the front lights are working properly.
the right rear t/s is working with both the lights on and off.
the left rear t/s stays on (bright filament lit) with the lights on and doesn't blink.
i just went out there and now everything is acting all crazy. i think this is a ground issue.
all the wires but the 4 ways are hooked up per the diagram brian supplied above.
it's too late to screw with it any more.
side note. i used the t/s switch and wiring that i took out of a 66 and the original problems were the same as with the 77 t/s switch.
did i mention how much i hate wiring. :cussing:

Figure you already checked, but is the bulb seated in the socket correctly?

I had the same issue and it turned out to be the ground (on my '57 Bird). I had painted the tail lamp buckets (including the studs that mounted it to the body). So after MANY hours I figured out it was the studs and removed the paint to make it grounded to the body and now the passenger side turn signal blinks instead of staying on.

Hope it helps. :D

While wiring can be fun, we need to keep in mind that we have it easy with mid-60's US designed wiring. I have been working on a friends 1969 XKE that has sat with a squirrel living in it for 22 yrs. Squirrels love wiring. I have a great color schematic. It really doesn't help much as the brits stayed with cloth wrapped wires decades after the rest of the world moved on. I am sure at one point you could see the colors on the cloth wraps, but not after 40 yrs. They must have also been tripping while designing things. The starter circuit has two in line relays. Obviously the one of the starter was not sufficient. Then they ran most of the always hot circuits through the ignition switch, which causes these to fail from too much amperage.

mice too :cussing:
a bit off topic but
learned a big lesson about living here recently, do not leave the windows down.
mouse got into my rambler, built a nest under the back seat and gave birth to several little meece.
would not have noticed if it had not left little pieces of shredded paper on my floor mat then i got curious and noticed some sticking out from under the back seat.
i was quite surprised at the the homestead under the seat, but i found the tiny mice and dropped them into a bucket of water, and the big one ran off.
