electrical problems

Post by bossford65 »

I have been chasing an electrical problem for several days on my 65 f100. The alternator & oil lights come on with the key on and go off when engine is started like they should. The problem is the alternator light is very dim when the key is in the on position. My wireing diagram is for a truck with gauges not warning lights. Does anyone have a diagram that show the warning lights, it sure would help me. Thanks James

For what it is worth, I've got factory gauges as well, after I got the truck on the road, notice my [at night ] my outer gauges were out, found the disconnected ground and hooked it up. Also my 'ALT' bulb was black, replaced, comes on very very dim while running, alt is charging, and have never had to jump or charge battery in truck either, and the battery is about 8 years old.Someday that bulb will burn out or I may get around to pulling it.Don't mean to 'cold' on this if anyone is going to chime in about.... AS I went thru the electrical system when I first noticed this and didn't find anything that bottered me.

The way it is wired an overcharge or undercharge can cause the light to glow. If it is over charging a small amount the light will glow very dim. Check voltage at the battery with a voltmeter with it running it should be somewhere between 13.3 and 14.7. If it is above 14.7 the regulator is grounded poorly or bad. Below 13.3 is usually a bad alternator or wiring connection at alternator or regulator. If your voltages are good I think I have a wiring diagram if you need it I will try and locate it just let me know.
If we learn from our mistakes I should be Einstein by now.
