1965 350 DRW Dump
1965 350 DRW Dump
Hello, my first post here and I've got a million questions, but I'll start with just one. The "350" is missing from both my side name plates as seen in the first picture. Would it have had them originally? I got the Dennis Carpenter catalog and they have them with a red background.
My truck is a '65 350 DRW dump body. 240 six with a 4 speed transmission. The 5.87 rear pulls like a mule but tops out about 45 mph. I'd like to get 65 mph out of it. Did Ford ever make, (use), small 2 speed rear ends for 16" wheels? OK, that's really two questions.
Thanks, LL

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
Welcome aboard! Nice looking truck! 1 st post and pics too, we love pictures. Silve #'s red background on the '350' nomenclatur is correct, 3 pins hold the bezel to the fender, careful and even prying will remove those. Ford did not offer a 2 speed for this series truck, you could use a gearmasters under/over drive set up $$$$$$$$ or change out your gears- someone should pipe in on this. How far into Maine are ya?

LL,
Welcome aboard from Kansas city.Nice clean 350 you've got.I'm no expert ,but i think the Carpenter inserts are correct. My badges are like yours empty.Don't know about the overdrive unit,I installed a set of 4:88's and can run close to sixty,my 350 weighs in at 6,800 empty. Here's a pic.of it.

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
Thanks guys. I'm in Norway, about an hour NW of Portland.
Wow, I wouldn't have guessed 6800 lbs. That's more than I thought.
60 isn't too bad, still a little slow for the interstate.
The truck is in pretty good shape. It does look it's best from about 15 feet away.
Note the creative use of Bituthene ice shield to seal the floor around the shift levers.

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
welcome
those are the correct inserts
had my old 65 350 with 4.88 and 352 engine up to at least 100 mph, topped out the speedometer, loud but held the road fine.
my current 66 f250 4x4 has 4.56 and no problems doing highway speeds
i think the rpm noise may scare people into thinking they cant keep up

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
rear end is no problem,, change them all the time,,, use any 67-79 rear end assembly since they have ratios from 3:73 to 4:10,, my 350 can run 75 pulling a car behind it,, get rid of those 2 piece wheels to tubeless 16" still can use those tires if set up for tubeless,, for front can be tricky carry 2 spares or I have a 350 parts truck here that has been changed all the way around that we brought in,, like any trucks we have had rears go first out the door and get changed,, my F-600 got rid of the 2 speed low gear to a later model disc brake and truck will run 100 mph and up,, many times Kathy had to tell me to slow up since I was out running her in a 350 power stroke many times to Carlisle

Thanks, great information.
Tom, is a 67-79 rear end swap a bolt in switch? Any drive shaft mods?

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
REAR Bolted in by U-Bolts,,, tied the brake cables up so would not be in the way,, kept original driveshaft, but changed out the universal joint so that all 4 caps where the same size by using a GM universal joint

Re: 1965 350 DRW Dump
Paul I do not know what was involved on front axle,, but will look closer since this 1 ton they put a 460 with a 4 speed granny gear in it and runs real good,, when we pull the motor and cab and sheet metal off will look closer to see if it was re-drilled or whatever they did to make it work,,
