4 on the floor install

Post by Danimal »

I'm installing a T 18 ( yes I wish I had a diff transmission) in my 66 slick. The 4 speed will be on the floor, in place of the original 3 on the tree.

It appears the top of the gear box will protrude through the floor board. Cutting a place for the shift cone is not enough.

My question is does anyone know of a templalate sold for the top of the gear box that will now be exposed? You know something I can weld in the cover the gearbox, like a custom trans hump. I did not locate anything on line.....except for Mustangs.

If I cannot find anything I will mold old beer cans around it

This trans will be attached too 390.

Thanks in advance!

The template is already stamped into your floor. You need to find a cover from a 65-79 truck with a 4spd. It is surprising how much room you will need to get the T-18 in or out.

Yeah I was surprised by how much of the floor I had to cut out. Thanks bruceanderson. I appreciate the help!

Actually, the hump from a four speed truck may not work for you. The hump is taller on both the com trans and four speed trans truck. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this but I believe standard 3 speed had a lower hump. Although, I think the 79 truck has a different setup.

The only thing I've had to do is move the hole for the shifter, but this may be due to using a later OD trans instead of the T-18.
