Tank swap question?

Post by unibody madness »

The "Turk" is in the body shop and I should be getting my frame back within the next few weeks.
When I do get it back I am going to install the gas tank between the rear rails.
What size fuel line did you guys use, 1/4, 5/16ths 3/8ths? I will be using the original 292 fuel pump, doing the bubble flair, and connecting it at both ends with rubber hose.
My working tank is in the goose neck of the bed and 1/4" works just fine, will 1/4" work with the extra length?

Hey John, was good to see you on chat Sunday night. Don't be a stranger
on there ok. Are you running all new line front to back? What was the stock size
on it? 1/4 or bigger? A larger size like 5/16 will take less effort to pull fuel
by the pump. You said you are using the stock Y block mechanical pump so I would
think it would work well. If you ever plan to switch to an electric pump mounted
at the rear next to the tank going to a slightly larger size could be benefial.
An old drag racer I knew ran half inch line, but he had a very thirsty engine.
Steve (LM14) could probably shed more light on this subject. Maybe he'll chime in.
I'll be doing the same thing on my 57 so I have to make a decision on it too. TR

I would certainly go 5/16" or bigger, just because of losses attributable to extra line length. Dale utilizes full half inch line from the rear tank to mechanical pump, so a good mechanical pump will easily handle the 5/16 line at that distance, possibly more readily than a constricted 1/4" line at that distance.

Thanks guys, that's what I was looking for going to order up the 5/16ths line today.
Enjoyed chat on Sunday, but have to get used to keeping up with all the different conversations going on at once.

I used 5/16 with a built 289/4bbl. Never a problem with it. Be sure to vent the tank.

5\16 was the factory except there were some bigger trucks like the f700 4x4 i had with y block that used a 3\8 lines
tank had bigger threads for the larger fittings, the (same) fuel pump just had larger holes and the 4v carb had 3\8 fittings.
there were others as i got my replacement tank for that from a bumpside

im thinking some of the other big blocks in cars may have had the 3\8 too.
