Chasing down the source of a rattle
Sounds like its coming from the firewall in the middle so I thought it was the kickdown rod hitting the firewall so I got it where it wont come close to hitting but rattle still there and while I was doing that I found a oil leak and fixed it,thought something fell down one of the defroster ducts so I took the fresh air intake hose off the heater box and blower motor out and it was full of junk so I cleaned it all out and now I have good heat but nothing in the heater box. Stereo was loose so fixed it and need to road test so its looking like the rattle is going to make fix everything else before i find it.

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
I have heard about the Coke bottle but I have been in about every cavity in this truck over the years but I am thinking it could have been something I lost in it or left loose.
Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
I've had annoying rattled that also sounded like the kick down rod. It was actually where the rod and the lever joined and took me ages to pinpoint it because it was tight. Another shim (washer) in-between and it fixed it up

that is not a legend
it happened to me a long time ago about 1980 or so
had a 78 fairmont with a glass on metal sound coming from the back seat
took the seat out, found nothing, then removed the drivers rear side panel , there it was, a coke bottle
car belonged to my dad before me, he bought it new. i showed him and he said he had occasionally heard it but thought it was just something in the trunk.

The story I was told a long time ago.....
Guy had a rattle in his car
Took it to the dealer, with no results
Drove him crazy & he tore into it himself
Got into the rear door, found a ....
Coke bottle hanging from a string inside
With a note inside saying ........
Rattles , don't it ?

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
some pertty simple things can be annoying rattles
heres a few i have had
air cleaner nut loose, not super loose just enough that normal engine vibrations can cause enough movement to rattle
shock mounting rubbers, many years and the rubbers can shrink and start to rot, mostly noticed on bumpy roads
ashtray and glovebox rubber stops missing
especially annoying are window rattles but they are easy to detect
some noises or rattles may travel a long ways thru the metal making them very hard to locate, like tailgate being a bit loose
spare tire holders are like that too

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
Sometimes I hear a rattle if I drive with the window down.
It usually means I'm driving behind a Chevy!

If it cain't be fixed with a sledge hammer it must be an electrical problem!

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
I am wondering if something broke in the heater box since 3 of the 4 bolts that hold it to the firewall were loose and it had been moving around some for who knows how long.
Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
I had a terrible squeak that was giving me fits on my 2010 F150. You could barely hear it with the windows up and was obviously louder with the windows down. Searched high and low and come to find out it was a rubber bumper on the tailgate.

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
I have had a low speed rattle in the heater area forever, bolts tight, ashtray and glovebox have rubbers, found it the other night coming down my driveway, def/heater flap blend door rattling, pull out the defroster cable a tad, no more rattle! Foam or some type of seal is gone, managed to get a couple of rubber bumpers in thru defroster tubes, 99% better.66camperspecial wrote:I am wondering if something broke in the heater box since 3 of the 4 bolts that hold it to the firewall were loose and it had been moving around some for who knows how long.

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
Funny story about rattles in trucks. I used to lease a road tractor from this place on occasion when I would need to make a run every so often and I got this one particular one a couple of times. On a trip I noticed it had a pretty big rattle coming from somewhere in the cab. After the second time I drove it I went in and talked to the mechanics there who serviced the trucks and they all laughed. Seems this driver for another outfit that leased the truck previously was always griping and complaining about everything. They got tired of hearing this guy go on and on and took a whole box of flat washers and stuck them inside the passenger door on the cab behind a removeable panel. Well about that time that guy was driving a newer truck and they had forgotten to take the washers back out. Lucky me.
Next time I drove it the washers were gone. They told me he was still always griping about any truck he drove and that they were going to put those in his current truck if he didn't quit complaining all the time. Haha! TR

Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
Inner fender bolts at firewall loose along with the hood hinge to body bolts loose too so I went around the whole front clip and tightened bolts today, while I was at it found one tail pipe hitting the spare tire carrier so it was a good day at fixing rattles.
Re: Chasing down the source of a rattle
Years ago I had a 71 Ford F100 with an annoying rattle under the dash. Bugged me for a couple years. I FINALLY found it one day. There was a brace under the dash bolted to the firewall. One of the bolts had not been tightened up all the way, and the flat washer had about 1/8" to dance around on the bolt and bang on the firewall. Tightened bolt and rattle was gone!
