Overdrive

Post by Fanatic »

My brother just bought a SWEET bump-side. [34K original miles 71 Sport Custom] with the real 3-speed overdrive (on the column).
How about someone explaining the best way to utilize this trans. It's been so long since I drove one that the old brain isn't workin.

Thanx, Tim

OK, im assuming you have the electric OD? has a push/pull handle under the dash? has a switch (kick down) under the gas pedal and should have a relay on the engine firewall. The way it works is you accelerate from 1st, shift to 2nd then to 3rd, push the handle in, take your foot off the gas and it will automatically shift to overdrive. when your speed goes below about 27mph, the governer will automatically shift out of OD. Lots of people skip 1st. start in second, push the handle, let off the gas and it shifts to OD if you are over 27mph, then shift to 3rd and you are still in OD. Theres a lot more to it, lot more you can do. you can rewire the system to where you have 6 forward speeds. the main thing you have to watch for is that the transmission will freewheel in OD (handle pushed in) you cannot back up with the handle in or it will tear up your od. It is a real neat system when you get used to using it.

Go to - http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/For ... 00-79List/ You may have to join. In the files section, there is a downloadable booklet on the OD tranny. Everything, operation, installing, electrical, troubleshooting, ect.

Also, there is quite a writeup about the OD tranny in a forum called something like "old burbs" or something like that, refering to suberbans. This writeup gives complete overhauling instructions plus how to wire it so you have six useable gears.
