1962 Unibody build
Re: 1962 Unibody build
My brother and I own and operate a small restoration and custom shop. We do most everything in house. I do all the mechanical, electrical and engine work, my brother runs the business. He used to do all the paint and body but back surgery has forced us to hire a body and paint man. We also have a metal fabricator who does some mechanical and interior as well. I'm also working on a 65' short bed for myself. I'll start another thread for it.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
Looking good, I really like that red. It looks like you started with a pretty solid truck. When you welded in the big back window did you weld the inside where the pinch welds were also? You don't seem to see too many cross draft paint booths any more, looks good. I'll be watching this build.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
We're planning on using steel rims painted body color with spider caps and trim rings along with white wall tires. I'm going to lower the rear with some DJM shackle mounts. I'm hoping to have the entire truck painted by spring.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
We've bought and assembled the paint booth about three years ago. Down drafts are so expensive, it's all we could afford. I've still got lot's of welding to finish up on with the cab. I'm going to fill all the external seams on the cab and the bed caps in the rear at some point. Power is coming froim a 67' Mustang. it's a 289 bored .030 with a mild camshaft, K code heads, ceramic headers, holley 600, Weiand intake along with a C4 transmission. The 3:70 gears will be changed out for a 3:00 or a 3:25. Will have air conditioning and heat from Classic Air. Hope to have more pics later next week.

I've never used a down draft booth but I know a well kept cross draft booth will give you extremely clean paint jobs.

Project is coming along sweet!
Did the 62 unibodies come with the rear cab mounts or did you ad them?

Re: 1962 Unibody build
Thanks. I believe unibodies have rear cab mounts. This one did and the parts truck I had did as well.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
Had a chance this last weekend to do some metal work to the Unibody. I replaced the bed end caps. Originals were so beat up they were unusable. I chopped off a set of nice ones from the 62 unibody long bed I had as a parts truck.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
I think you were lucky on the cab mounts, unless Ford added them in later years, I have four 61 unis, and I had to add the set to the only one that has them. Great indicator is if the rears are rive, ted on or bolted on.
Love the color and the great job fitting the lwb corners on.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
Looking great! Looks like the slick is a good starting point too.
I'm digging the colour, I just finished mine in the same. It looks brown in the pics but out in daylight it's great.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
Had a chance to do some work today. I filled in the fuel tank filler hole. Filled in 37 holes on the firewall and the antenna hole. Almost time for some rough in bodywork.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
After about a month away from it, had a chance today to do some more work. I mocked up the motor and installed the transmission cross member and built the lower motor mount to the frame. getting close to sending the transmission out for the rebuild and putting the rest of the motor together. the one pictured is a 289 I had in the back of the shop.

Also mocked up the steering column. The Dakota front end puts the steering shaft at a much different place from the stock box and unit. Using a 67 Camaro column from the junk pile in the back. We'll buy a unit from Speedway Motors that's paint able and has a tilt column for the actual one.

Re: 1962 Unibody build
It's been a while since I've been on here. Been busy building the engine for this unibody. It's a 302 bored .030, Procomp heads, Erson camshaft, Erson roller rockers and the Edelbrock Enduroshine Intake and 600cfm Carb. The color is a GM called cashmere. It's what the other half of the truck will be painted. I would post a picture but it says my board attachment quota has been reached.
