1965 F100 Stepside Turbo 302 Build (perpetual project)
1965 F100 Stepside Turbo 302 Build (perpetual project)
Won't go into a ton of details because I don't know much about the history. Here is what I do know it is a 1965 F100 stepside was originally an I6 and a 3 on the tree, It is now a 289 with c4. The truck has been painted at least 6 times that I can see, and someone swapped a 64 grille and header panel onto the truck. It has a nice holley double pumper and runs amazing. Two pumps of the gas, turn the key and it's running. It has a painless harness that is somewhat hooked up.. Oh and someone shot it with like rustoleum oil based paint at some point which was done poorly and was obnoxious.. SO I decided to step up the obnoxious a little more....
Parts I have ordered:
Brake booster
Shackles
Fuel pump (installed)
Mustang Bullitt Wheels and adapters (installed)
New tail light lenses (installed)
Tailgate hinges and hidden latches
Wood for the bed
Paint
Bunch of other stuff I can't remember
Plans for the truck.
1) Get the yellow Gone!
2) Drop it a little
3) Patina the new paint
4) drive the crap out of it, and haul motorcycles etc....
The truck is my beat around, I really needed a little "shop truck" to haul my toys and trash.. I plan to "SOME DAY" do a nut and bolt restomod on this truck but that will be when my kids are in college a few years from now..
Day I bought it Wheels and adapters installed Starting to sand..

More paint prep..
The color is not a ford color (gasp) it is actually 799 GM (think 1957 belair)

Out in the sun curing up...
Bedlining the sides.. It is a run around afterall... needs to be tough.

I am going to get rid of the rest of the yellow paint in the interior this week and then patina the turquoise to show the black in some places.

Started patina work. Leveled with scotch Brite pad then scuffed through with 800 grit. Buffed with 3M compound. Very happy now to do the rest of the truck.

Stealing 20 minutes a day right now. Life has been busy, but at this pace it will be on the road in about 2 weeks...

Still working on the patina. Took it for a drive to pick up out Christmas tree, broke necks the whole way there and the boyscout troop we bought the tree from thought it was pretty cool!

Do the seat belts first!! There is no worse feeling as your truck slides into the ditch at about 90kmh and remembering your seat belts were still on the 'to-do' list!
62 short-uni, cv front swap, 4.6/auto
plus many other's!

Ha! It has seat belts, but is missing the center seatbelt, I want to add one so both my kids can ride at the same time.390fastback wrote:Do the seat belts first!! I'd get your gauges working before driving it much. Too many stories about unknown issues going really bad by not knowing about either oil pressure or water temp. I can live without a speedo, but not a gauge pack.
Re: 1965 F100 Stepside Build (perpetual project)
Yeah I basically dont plant to move it again until the "road worthy" section of my list is complete.
Re: 1965 F100 Stepside Build (perpetual project)
I have done quite a bit of work recently.
Got the coolant and oil pressure gauges working
Installed an HEI distributor with built in coil
New fuel lines and filter
New 8mm spark plug wires
Wrestling with what I am assuming is a clocked cam issue..
But the truck runs well, miles of smiles.

Great paint job!! Nice work
Re: 1965 F100 Stepside Build (perpetual project)
Thanks! Still buying parts.
Re: 1965 F100 Stepside Build (perpetual project)
So.. I have been in beast mode when it comes to buying/installing parts. I have been driving the truck locally a few days a week although want to start trusting it more to go further outside my comfort zone..
Here is what I have purchased in the last 2 weeks and am getting ready to install in / on the 289.
1) Torque cam (mild street cam) with Lifters
2) Valve Covers and gaskets
3) Air cleaner with washable filter (also period correct 289 decal)
4) Offenshauser 360 Intake (got a good deal on this or I would have gone edelbrock performer)
5) Rebuilt Holley 600 Next Gen with electric Choke (have the same carb just manual choke right now)
6) Tri-Y headers
Stuff I ordered forever ago still on the shelf...
1) Steering wheel horn ring
2) Brake Booster
3) Drop Shackles
4) Speedo Cable
5) Heated seat kit...
I am hoping the above items will put a little pep in the old fellas step. I already put a new fuel pump, and HEI on it..
I put some new decking down in the bed, and am really happy with where the truck is heading...

Young Guns Car Club (YGCC) where you dont need to spend $10,000 on your ride to be cool.
Re: 1965 F100 Stepside Build (perpetual project)
WELL it has been a little while since I updated this topic so I decided to drop a few gems here. The direction of the build has changed a little since I last posted. Here is what I have done, and where im headed..
Since the last post I swapped to an edelbrock 600 electric choke carb, I added a CD player, swapped in a GM HEI distributor, lowered it a few inches, and swapped to a new wheel and tire package... I am really happy with the overall feel and look of the truck BUT as a guy who is used to some "umph" in my vehicles the tired 289 is just not cutting it in the excitement department. Enter Phase 2...
I have decided to Swap the motor out of the truck. Originally I thought that I was going to be content with just having the truck look cool and get me a-b but that's just not me. I was basically gifted a 302 roller motor out of a 1995 F150 that had been rebuilt recently. I intended on just dropping it in and leaving the fuel injection on it and making it "reliable" but the new carb has pretty much stopped all the hard start issues and driveability problems I was having so I don't even care about the fuel injection anymore.
I was helping a buddy with his 1968 mustang trying to help him spend his money when I conjured up a blowthrough turbo setup that he should do. He rejected the idea but now I can't get it out of my head. SO I am going to do a single turbo setup on the 302. The plan currently consists of the following..
Order Hotside parts for a single T70 turbo
Order FITech Power adder 600hp 4 injector Fuel Injection setup
Order T70 turbo/wastegate and accessories
Order Intercooler kit (universal)
Fabricate Carb hat
Rebuild c4 transmission
Install LSD in 9" rear
have exhaust reworked to single dumped to the drivers side of the bed
Move gastank to bed/mustang tank install
Grand total just under $3000. I do not plan on running a lot of boost so I do not plan on upgrading the internals right now. I will probably buy another 302 block and build it with forged parts to put in down the line. So for now I will limit the boost to 8psi.
I am collecting parts now for this job and plan to complete it over Christmas. I am elbow deep in rebuilding the motor in my Porsche 911 right now so that needs to get done first.
Should be a fun project.
