Making power out of a 302

Post by Jacobs63 »

I just scored a good 1968 302 for my 63. Anyone care to share any cheap and easY ways to wake this engine up a bit? Budget is fairly tight for now so try to keep that in mind.

Cam, dual plane intake good exhaust. This will get you close to where you want to be. That being said, 351w starts where a 302 ends up and would have been a better choice of engine to start with if you wanted power. Then again, if you want real power, but not on a budget big block is where to go, but there goes any real fuel mileage. Everything is relative.

I just got an eldebrock 2121 manifold today. I’ll look into cams and carbs soon. Is there any factory heads that are better than the others I can look for at the u pull it yards?

the gt40p heads off of explorers are decent but you need to get the manifolds with them or aftermarket headers as the spark plug angle is slightly different than standard 302 heads.my local pick n pull is full of these.i seen 4 different complete 302 explorer motors last month when I was there.
