What the heck is wrong with this thing ????

Running old (1970) gas combines cutting wheat

They have inline 6 cylinder engines ...

Very similar to the engines in our Slicks actually ....

Not running right the end of last year...
I blame it on ignition
Cutting out , popping ....
we replaced wires, cap , points , condenser , coil, plugs ...
The whole 9 yards

Seemed to run ok ... then it started doing it again
So I run a new heavy wire from battery to cab & back to coil & run a resistor
I blamed the fifty year old wiring .....
this will fix it !!!
And it did
For a while ......... then it runs funny again

So I take off the carb
Tear it apart , clean it , blow out the ports .....
Now it seems to run ok
Will know more as time goes by .....
I'll be bald ... pulling my hair out over this

I pride myself of diagnosing problems
This one is tougher than I like
It doesn't help that it is hot... dirty... and I need it to run .. NOW!

I had a fuel pump give me those symptoms when it warmed up. It was an out of the box problem. 33 gallons per hour when cold-warm. When the engine was at operating temperatures fuel pump was pumping about 2 gallons an hour.

Yep... been there done that too

Found a heavy duty electric pump from napa
That seems to work good
The guy said they are what they sell to people with
Bigger vehicles like motor homes

The tank sits about 5' ft below the engine
The original electric pump sits right below the tank
So far these have proven good .. about a $80 pump

we're 98 and 46%....and in the middle of the woods, I never get wind to cool me off.

Say a little prayer, it works for me.....

Id have ceased problems long ago

Pat, Give a careful look at the the little fiber washers around the post where the point current passes thru the distributor housing. Good luck & keep the old iron running.

Seems like the carb was the big culpret
We had to take the other machines off too
Modern fuel & the fact they sit 350 days a year
