p/s on '65 f250 4x4

Post by robert porterfield »

has anyone done a p/s swap/conversion on a slick 4x4 ? i have seen several done around my area but they were coulmn+box+major frame sugery jobs. was kinda thinking of using the "high-boy"power-assist stuff, just flip the control valve around from a front steering gear to a rear on my slick truck already has the '76 3500lbs front end in it, wanted ths disc brakes.

the 61-66 f250 4x4s have a one piece column so if you want to use anything besides the ram type surgery is needed.
ram parts are hard to come by and lots of guys dont like the setup. personally i dont care about ps and would not bother on my 4x4 slicks, wife does not want either so no need to deal with it.
might have a pic of a front axle with thr ram on a slick, will post later if i do.

Welcome Robert. I have P/S on my 66 F100 4x4, but the F250 is differant. You say that you have a 76 front end on it now, Ford did have P'S on these trucks in 76, you might start by looking at a mid 70's 4x4 in a wrecking yard to see what was on them. I as herd about some using the Toyota box conversion, not sure how it works on a F250. I used the Toyota box on my F100, but it is very differant from your truck.

bertha66, not sure why you used a toyota box on a 66 f100 4x4 as the ps from an f100 4x4 or big bronco up to 79 bolts on?

The P/S on the 78 bronce is a bolt on, but when I did mine they were running about $650 in price. And I understand that they were not very good. The other 4x4 's of the early 70's that I have seen are power asst., with the ram. THe cost of the Toyota system that I have was $275, thats with machine work and all the parts to do the job. Sorry that don't have away to post pictures of it, but it looks just like the Ford box that I took off and it is bolted in the same location.

this is one somebody installed with a disc brake 4x4 front on a 65 f350, same as f250 4x4.
pics did not turn out real good but you can see the unit mounted.

tam bolts to axle here.
also needs the tie-rod connecting tube with the hole for the other end of ram.
