Some simple questions from New Member
OK well wonted to say hi to everyone since Iam a new member. I actually bought 62 UNI's truck so Iam a proud new owner of my first (but not last ) F100. Paul has helped me out tremendously and turned me onto this site.
First thing...DAMN I love my new truck. Its a good feeling having so many people giving you a thumbs up and nodding while cruising. I also love how I get more looks than a 60,000 dollar Mercedes going down the road next to me. Must suck knowing that you spent that much many to look like everyone else.
Anywho here are just a few of MANY that i will be posting in the future.
1. First off. I have 390 and was wondering what should the gap spacing be for spark plugs and what type. I know the original were copper but dont want to go to that if i do not need to.
2. What type of transmission fluid for a C6. I seen some recommend Type F and Type CJ but then they say dont use one if you used the other???? What gives.
Also, what is the main concern and/or problem I should always keep up with with the 390, C6 set up to keep anything major from happening.
Thanks to everyone and I hope to learn more everyday.

Girls love a pick-up man.
Welcome, In my 390 I use the standard type of Motercraft plugs, set at .035-.036, I use points in my truck set at .016. The last C6 that I had rebuilt used type F before the rebuild, but after I was told to use Mercron. To keep my FE engine running along time I keep the oil and filters changed regular, for me that's every 2-3000 miles.

hell yeah she's pretty.
Motorcraft filters are good. NEVER use a standard FRAM. Somebody did lab tests on them and found that the "ultra fine" filter media quickly clogged up, and a defective bypass valve would blow open and allow unfiltered oil into the engine, sometimes from day 1. Im running valvoline 10w40, ran 20w50 VR1 when I was breaking it in. Type F is the only ATF you should use. I reccommend installing a Pertronix immediately. it was the BEST thing I ever did...

The Type F versus Mercon debate is huge. Type F has more "friction" than Mercon. So using mercon in a C6 may result in more slippage and less tight shifts, especially if its a C6 using original components, as opposed to more modern, performance bands and plates.
On the other hand, Mercon is better fluid in other ways, heat stability etc. and synthetic fluid can be had locally (Mercon VI should be avoided as its a completely different beast).
I have decided to fill my newly freshened (and completely empty) C4 (same era and fluid recs as C6) with Amsoil, but I would not bother to do that with a tranny that already had 12 quarts it it.
Reality is, you can top off the C6 with Type F or Mercon either one and be OK. If the tranny is slipping already though, I would do a drain and fill with universal tractor fluid, such as HyGaard (JD) or equivalent. At least that is the line from www.fordmuscle.com forums about C4 and C6 tranny care.....

INEPTOCRACY: (in-ep'-toc-ra-cy) : a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
