C- 6 Oil Leak

Post by jakdad »

Leaking around shift lever. How hard is it to replace the seal on this shaft with the trans in the truck?
Thanks

Not hard, just a tad messy.
You WILL need to keep the valve body VERY clean, though, not even the slightest bit of grit.

Remove the pan (after draining the transmission, of course!)

Remove the filter

Put the transmission in neutral (chock the truck first).

Remove the shift linkage on the outside. This includes the downshift linkage.

Remove the valve body - be careful here, remove only the bolts that go through the bottom flat plate and all the way through the valve body into the case. These hold the valve body onto case. Several only hold the flat plate to the valve body. Remove those only needed to take the valve body off.

To remove the shift rod that goes through the case, look for a large locknut on the inside. Note the position of the shift rod with respect to the pawl on the other side of the transmission.
Remove this locknut and the sleeve, and pull the shift rod out the side of the transmission.

Replace the seal, a large O-ring.

Reassembly is the reverse.

Thanks Banjo, I had done these years ago and that's pretty much how I remember it. And yes, don't take the wrong screws out of the Valve body. I don't remember if my pan has a drain plug or not. If not, it will have one when I finish.

An awful lot of trouble for a little O-ring, that's for sure.

I have a haynes manual.
When you need the torque values PM me.

The Valvebody is in inch pounds
Someday I'll get another slick :(

Thanks Mr. Heavy, I have manuals and an inch lb. torque wrench. The reason I ask you guys about stuff is that quite often, there is a better way than what's in the manual. I do appreciate the offer, as I have not always had friends like you folks.

that was a very good post by banjopicker.

but you really need to take the valve body apart, its lots of fun.
get a quick shift kit and you can trade a few things around inside so you can have a neck snapping, tire chirping 1-2 shift and maybe 2-3 too depending on rear end.
