All the talk about hood hinges

Folks with all the talk about hood hinges. Can I just remove the springs and run a prop?? Has anybody done this? Would that solve the drunken' hood look??

I removed the spring on the 'bad' hinge and reinstalled the hinge. It did not change the way the hood sits.

Repop hood hinges are relatively cheap these days, one company even has them on sale this month; http://fordtruk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4010

Bob,the hinge needs the spring to pull the back of the bonnet(hood) down in to place and stop it bouncing around.

I took the springs off of my 66 several years ago. The hood sat back down where it was intneded. There were two issues that I had to contend with after the springs came off: 1. You need to carry a broom handle with you ore manufactor a heavy duty prop like the rice grinders use (oops that wasnt politically correct), and 2. I made sure that the safety catch worked and added a bolt through the catch to make sure the hood didnt part company at 65 mph. With those in mind it was a cheeeep easy temporary solution. PS, it also is a great way to build arm muscles because these hoods are HEAVY.

$45 bucks a side in that link is cheap cheap cheap compared to Dennis Carpenter's $150 a side. good deal I would say, but still a bad design.

I will be picking up the Buick forward tilt hinges etc. tomorrow at the local U-pull-it (is the their real name too). $6.99 per hinge, $4.99 for a latch. They will work with the stock Slick latch but I am thinking about going to an inside release too so I may snatch one while I'm there depending on the handle style. I'm sure I can find a bottom of the dash mount Ford one too. I'll take pics &measurements etc. and do a "How To" to make it easy for anyone else who wants to do this.

I already have my buick parts - just havnt had time to actually do the work.

Maybe I will wait n let you do the fabrication figurin lol, and then do mine - my bad - did I say that lol

Actually I have the hinge mounts all done, just need to be able to line up the rear catches which i shoulda did while the motor was out so I could sit inside an eyeball.

The buick hinge needs to be widened about ten inches to work without interferrin with the rad n such

most any midsized buick from 87 - 92, however the century? ( i cant remember names) was the longest runnin, with some only doin one year or two during that period

I didnt see the car mine came from - not allowed in the yard for insurance purposes

I paid $40 for every nut n bolt, plus all the hardware includin the bumper rubbers

I will post pix as soon as I can borrow a digital camera

I was looking at the hood hinges on a 90s Mustang, I've seen a lot of those hinges on fat fendered rods and customs, they look like they would go right into a Slick without much work. You would have to install a prop or gas rods though.
