Lincoln 302 to Slick Swap

Post by Gritsngumbo »

I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for my swap. The donor car is a CFI/EFI/TBI?? and I'm going to covert to a carb. As I understand it I can't use the current manifold with a 2 bbl carb or change manifolds and use a 4 bbl.
My question concerns the ignition. I know I can use the current ignition setup, but can I use a distributor (Mallory, etc.) on either manifold? If there's a difference in how the distributor mounts, what do I look for in a replacement manifold.

Your best bet for an induction system is likely a Performer 289 or 302 manifold and a 600 CFM vacumn secondary carb. Personally I like Holleys, a 4180 would be about perfect but it's the factory carb from 1985 Mustang GTs & don't grow on trees, they do show up on Ebay though. Alot of people like the Edelbrock Q Jet & Carter knockoffs too (Performer series carbs).
Most 289-302 dizzys should fit with most manifolds unless it's some way out performance application. If your engine is a roller cam 302 (some Lincolns are but yours is probably too old by a few years) make sure that any aftermarket dizzy has the right gear for the camshaft.
Are you going to try a set of the factory Foxstang headers too?

Greg: What's a "dizzy"?

Actually I have been looking at one of the Autolite 4100 from Pony Carburetors. Hadn't heard of the 4180. Can't access their online store now but as I recall the price wasn't too bad. (Found it: $269 +core for the 4100 and $289 for the 2 bbl. and $349 +core for the 4180)

Yeah, the "stang headers are still on my list...I guess you have to notch the cross member for them to fit a slick (don't remember who on here said that)

So any 289/302 manifold will work and mount a distributor? What about the one I have?

61 Ford: Thanks for the info. I did find a unit in the local pick a part. It's in a 03 CV police car. Having trouble getting a price from them as they want to price each piece rather than the total unit. I did get a WAG from them of about $300. One off a an 05 sold for $800 at another yard. Thought that was a little high (from the prices I'd heard on here) but don't know the condition/wear etc.

dizzy=distributor. far as those carbs id say those are a little high im watchin a 4bbl 600 cfm holley 4160 polished for 257 plus 8.95 shipping.on that cv yea 800 way too high mine ran 350 250 plus 100 removal fee bc its a pain to remove and what i did i acutally didnt need the crossmember but they were too lazy to take it all part so they said they "gave" me the crossmember so maybe pull something like that on them?

I am understanding (after reading it though again, lol) that you have a crank fired ignition engine? If so it basically has the lower half of a distributor in it: oil pump drive. Should be pretty much a bolt in to replace. Driven properly you will likely find you get better mileage with the 4bbl carb. 2bbl carbs are a bad compromise IMHO, too big for optimal mileage/too small for full throttle applications. The Autolite 4100 is semi/similar to a Holley in design, they're not bad.
The 4180 is a special carb made by Holley for Ford for the 85 GT 5 speed roller cam engine cars, great 302 street carb!
Go back to the pickapart, pull the crossmember & cart it into the office. Offer them $250-$300 & if they balk start to walk away leaving it in the office. FYI they don't want to carry it back out themselves.
The first one there looks pretty nice.

Thanks guys. I agree about the 4 bbl. I was just trying to save some money by not buying another manifold. I'm really leary of buying a carb that someone has "rebuilt" on their kitchen table vs a "professionally" built one. Guess I'm still remembering the carbs and the rebuilds from the 50's. Leaky, leaky.

61 Ford: What would you estimate that cross member and related pieces weighs? At my age, it's a little much for me to crawl around under a car at the pickapart, so I'll have to get someone to help me.

We put a FI 302 in the 63. First engine just used a stock Ford 2 barrel in place of the TBI. Had to mount an electric fuel pump because the engine didn't have provisions for a mechanical pump. Also used a Ford Duraspark ignition and distributor. Worked great until the engine started showing it's age.
Second engine was EFI. Yanked the plenums and installed a used Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley 600 carb. Has been on the road for years.
If you drove a Ford, you wouldn't need a good wrench!
